Quilted cotton is the best material for quilting. Natural fibers will not melt if you put a stove or pot on it. Easy to wash, available in many colors and prints. You’re sure to find furniture that matches your decor or personality.

Quick Tip: Leave a 2-3 inch opening when sewing. I love making a cross with pins to remember!

6. Round the outside of the fabric with a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving a 2-3″ allowance to turn one long side.
Quick Tip: To fold the opening, start sewing at a 1/2-inch angle perpendicular to the edge of the fabric. Then lower the needle, raise the presser foot and turn the fabric. Start sewing along the edge of the fabric.
Quick tip: To get sharp corners, I like to cut in three steps – before the 45 degree corner. Then cut some small pieces on both sides.

Quick tip: Use a toothpick or the tip of fabric scissors to soften the corners, but don’t be too sharp!
9. Press the seams to make sure the opening is tucked in neatly and the edges are straight. If necessary, use wire or magic clips to secure.
10. Sew around the edge of the pad, 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric. This closes the gap and provides a good border area.

The holidays are a little late, but I thought today would be a good opportunity to get ahead of the holiday season and make some new rugs for my dining room table using the new BERNINA 790. ALL. These coasters are quick and easy to make and mean I’ve checked another holiday item off my to-do list! Read on to find out how we made them.
Start by dividing the 41 pieces of fabric into three different groups (13) 2 1/2″ x WOF. Use dark, medium and light fabrics. I love the shabby look this combination gives!

Start by working through the stacks and choose a 5 2 1/2″ x WOF strip for the center of the support. Sew them lengthwise to make a 10 1/2″ x WOF rectangle. I purposely chose three dark and two light fabrics and I really like how they look.
Press all seams to one side before starting the next step of adding hems.
Mark the centers on all four sides of the broken rectangle. You can mark them with a pen, like I did, or you can mark them with a needle. If you use a pen, make sure it doesn’t fade or heat up.

Mark 1/4 inch from the four corners. “X marks the point” is very important when setting boundaries. Read on to find out why.
For me, it’s always one of the fun parts of sewing, playing with all the fabrics and listening to them with the base layers. From the frame group, select 4 border strips and cut each in half to make four 2.5 cm x 20 inch strips. Set half aside.
Next, we need to mark the edges so that we can match the slats. Mark the center of the 4 hems, then mark two hems 7 3/4 inches from the center on each side (top and bottom).

By matching the center and corner marks, sew the border strips to the edges of the small rectangle, stopping exactly with the corner marks (X marks the point) in the middle of the pad. DO NOT cut the extra length. Repeat for all sides. Don’t forget to click it!
Cutting corners is a lot easier than people think, all you have to do is place a rectangle in front of you.
Next, match the two pieces of border fabric (folding the bottom border fabric to match the right border fabric) to match the long edges and make a 45 degree angle inside the resulting rectangle.
How To Make Easy Holiday Placemats
Do you see that place? This point is as important as the X that marks the point. This is the place to start sewing the mirrored corners together.
Use a 45 degree ruler to mark diagonally from the corner of the seam line (where the two sides meet) at a 45 degree angle. I use Creative Grids 4 1/2″ with 45 degree markers. This 45 degree line is very important. See how it matches the outside edge of my border material? This helps me make sure I mark an angle of 45 degrees Watch my YouTube video for detailed instructions Repeat for all corners.
Sew along the marked lines, starting right at the junction of the stitches and working your way back to the end of each stitch. The up/down function of the presser foot on the BERNINA 790 PLUS allowed me to slide over the sewing line so I could easily find where to start sewing! Now you can cut off the excess hem fabric and open the corner seams.
