In its simplest form, a spreadsheet is just columns and rows. When a column and a row meet, cells are formed. You can use formulas to enter data into cells – and the smaller your spreadsheet, the easier it is to read and understand the numbers.
But when your balance sheet starts to grow, the conclusion requires a little more force. That's where pivot tables come in. A pivot table takes a lot of data and summarizes it.
Think about it this way: standard spreadsheets basically have “flat data” represented by two axes, horizontal (date) and vertical (row):

To get more ideas, you need to add another level of information. In the case above, for example, you start with each sale in its own row, and each column provides different information about that sale. But if you change (or pivot) the axis of the table, you can add another dimension:
Now you are not looking for a sale. Instead, you look at aggregated data: How many units did we sell in each region on each ship day?

You have a page full of raw data, so the first thing you should do is create a spreadsheet.
If you are using a dataset and some or all of your columns are unnamed (ie, the top row is empty), you must name the columns to create a column table for the data.

If you click on one of the suggested options, Google Sheets will automatically build your initial table. For example, click on the third option (“Total amount billed for each project type”), and you'll see the project types in column A and the total amount billed for each in column B.

So, all you have done so far is to add an existing column to your pivot table. You need to add more information if you really want to get value from your report.

The next step adds the Project Type as a column. In the pivot table editor, click Add next to Columns, and select Project Type. Here is the result:
Now that we have our rows and columns, we need to provide calculated values to each cell in the pivot table to see the total amount charged. In the pivot table editor, click Add next to Cost, and select Billing Amount.
To make sure you see the total amount of the image (except, for example, the average amount of the image), go to the Summary field and select Sum.

You will also see that the “Grand Total” is added and automatically calculated. This allows us to see the total amount we charged for each client and the total amount we charged for each type of project for all clients.
You can already see the power of the pivot table, but what we created does not answer our question: we have not yet refined the table to show the values of 2017.

To do this, click Add next to the Filters option, and select Year. Both 2017 and 2018 (the two years in our original data) will be eligible for audit. Do not select 2018 and click OK to update the table to show only 2017 data.
With all the information we want in front of us, we can now answer almost any question we have about the data. To strengthen our understanding of the use of pivot tables in Google Sheets, we will go through two more examples.
