How To Make A Coffee Table Out Of Crates – Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in DIY, interior decorating and lifestyle. Hope you had a great stay!

Do you want to make your own furniture but don't know where to start? Think you have two left hands or no power tools? Don't let this limit you! I put together a super simple coffee table with Gorilla Glue that requires no cutting or drilling!

The coffee table is made from 28 square pieces of wood that are simply stacked and glued together with Gorilla Wood Glue. It couldn't be easier, the only tool you need is to secure the legs to the bottom of the table.

Industrial Coffee Table

I cut the wood at my local lumberyard, it's something you can do anywhere that sells lumber, it saves you a lot of work and is perfect if you don't have a saw. I often have lumber cut for me, especially sheet material, professional saw table measurements are more accurate than mine.

To make the table you need to apply a generous amount of glue to a piece of plywood and line up your first 7 pieces of wood on the sheet. The sheet is a bit narrow compared to your 7 pieces. This is because you have a bit too much and can't see the paper when you look at the table. Before building the table make sure all the ends of the wood are smooth.

I like the ends of the wood to be uneven, so I have small pieces between 0.5 and 1 cm glued in random order. You can emphasize this length difference for a more dramatic effect, or you can line them up perfectly. I love the way the light bounces off the slightly rough edges creating a nice texture on my table.

To make sure you're starting with a stable base, wrap the first layer of wood in duct tape and let the glue dry for half an hour.

When you are done stacking and gluing all the wood you need to clamp the table down to hold all the wood in place while the glue dries, I used masking tape, making sure the tape is as tight as possible. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours.

The next day remove the tape and turn the table over, being careful that the table is heavy. Line the legs with the corners of the plywood and screw the hairpin legs with wood screws. Use a screw long enough to go through the plywood and about halfway through the first piece of wood.

How To Choose The Right Coffee Table

Set the table right side up and do a final check with your sandpaper to make sure the edges of your coffee table are nice and smooth. You can oil, varnish or paint your table but I prefer to keep it as is.

I love my new coffee table! It only took me about an hour to make and then 20 minutes the next day, super quick and super simple!

Gorilla wood glue is very strong so my new table is a strong build and an easy build for you to cut wood. Metal hairpin legs give a stacked wood coffee table a nice industrial look, I like to leave the metal exposed but you can spray it a fun color. I think mint green or bright yellow would look really nice.

The slight variation in how I stack the wood gives a nice touch of texture to the edges of my table, creating little shadows for me especially as the light hits the ends.

When stacking your wood be sure to keep the best pieces of wood for the top and sides of your table. Hide a few different colored pieces of some knots in the center of your table.

The project is fun to make and easy to make. I love mixing different materials and I think steel and wood complement each other. To seal the cedar, I used Minwax water-based protective polyacrylic finish. The sealer is very strong, dries quickly and is crystal clear. I love how it gives the wood a raw, organic look.

This project is sponsored by Minwax and I was awarded for creating this item. I only promote products that I trust and recommend to my friends and family. Minwax is one of those products. I have been using their stains and sealers for years. They have all kinds of options for stainers and sealers. I often use oil based polyurethane and one of my favorite Minwax colors is Walnut Special.

Steel: If you buy steel from the mill it will be much cheaper and you can buy in long segments. Two 10-foot sections will get you close, but you'll need an extra two feet for the last section, so get an extra 4-foot steel bar.

If you buy from Home Depot, they sell more expensive segments that are only 4 feet long. You'll pay about $8.25 per portion. You will need seven 4-foot-long sections.

The lower shelf is made in the same way as the table top. The shape is different and another modification is that pocket holes are drilled in each corner before the pegs are added. The pocket hole jig should be set for 3/4 inch thick stock. Pocket holes will allow you to attach the bottom shelf directly to the 4×4 legs.

Sand the picket to make it smooth. You can leave some texture on the board if you want. Wear a dust mask during the sanding process.
