To find out, I’ve measured the power consumption of these and put them all together in a handy guide.

My test equipment to accurately measure the amount of electricity used by a ceiling heater. I wanted to take ALL the guesswork out of it to get the best data possible – so I turned on a 52″ ceiling fan and hooked it up.

Knowing that there was no substitute for a hands-on test to determine how much electricity a ceiling fan was using, I wired the ceiling fan to run with an energy meter.

So I decided to tackle it once and for all. To do this, I plugged in a 52-inch 3-speed ceiling fan.

I then plugged it into a high-quality extension cord and used my trusty Kill-A-Watt power meter to measure the power consumption in watts.

I measured the ceiling heater’s power consumption in watts. To be honest, I was expecting a lot of power, but I was wrong! In fact, a ceiling fan set at high speed uses less electricity than other small fans. (Note: when measuring light power consumption, power consumption in watts was for three 15W bulbs)

As you can see, even at the highest speed (3 or “high” when the fan speed selector chain is pulled), I was surprised to find that a standard 52″ high ceiling fan was drawing less than 50 watts.

Even more surprising is the low power consumption at the lowest speed setting: only 12 watts! That’s less than most air purifiers and small desk fans I’ve tested.

The basic formula for calculating ceiling heater power is in amperes (amps, also written as “A”). However, most of those sold today use standard induction motors. Therefore, they use the magnetic fields created by the alternating current in your home to rotate the fan motor.

These are rough numbers, but even conventional ceiling fans should be pretty close. Although the ceiling voltage is slightly lower than 120V AC, the results will be the same.
