How To Make A Garden Table – This DIY patio table with drink coolers built into the center ice box is the CUTEST! Follow these woodworking plans and build this picnic table with cooler and matching benches to create an outdoor dining space this summer.
The multi-talented Heidi and Brent of Cruz Workshop designed and built these DIY outdoor tables and benches to transform their patio into a dining space for BBQs and summer parties.

We've teamed up with Amy from HerToolbelt to put together some woodworking plans so you can build your own ice table and matching outdoor benches.
Woodworking Paper Plan To Make Outdoor Table And Benches
Greetings from South Dakota! My name is Heidi and my faithful husband Brent and I have been remodeling and building everything from picture frames to dollhouses in our converted garage called the Cruise Workshop. We are excited to share our detailed plans showing the construction process of the Veranda Ice Table, which we affectionately call the “Party Table”.

Finished patio table measures 76 1/8″L x 40 1/2″H x 30″H and includes 2 beverage coolers with lids.
A Crafty Mix
The design of the table centers around these unique planters available in the outdoor/plant section at Home Depot or on their website.
At 20″ x 10″, they're the perfect size for a summer drink holder that can hold a ton of drinks and cost less than $10 each! (It doesn't hurt to get a few spares if you need to replace them.)
If you can't find these freezer boxes or don't have a Home Depot near you, you can buy similar inexpensive planters here or on Amazon – you'll just have to pre-plan and adjust the holes and supports for slightly different placement. length and width, so read the woodworking plans carefully before you start building them.

There is enough space in the middle of the table to open the umbrella.

With a few tools and a lot of patience, this project can be completed in a weekend for only $150!
A great choice for outdoor furniture, cedar is much more expensive than the Douglas fir we chose for the table you want to see.
The Home Depot in our area carries Douglas fir, but only in 2×8 and 2×6 material, so we used cedar for the 4×4 legs.

No matter what type of wood you choose, several coats of quality filler are essential to protect the table and matching benches not only from mother nature, but also from our children who may spill dinner and desserts.
We decided to paint our table with American walnut and then finish it with several coats of water based semi-gloss paint. (See below for details).

Best Diy Outdoor Furniture Ideas To Update Your Porch Or Patio
We had seen similar ideas, but felt we could improve the design to create a more durable and strong product that would withstand our harsh climate cycles.
Therefore, we do not recommend pre-cutting the wood to the desired length. We think it's best to make cuts while working on the plans, which gives you the freedom to make small adjustments as needed to ensure a sturdy table.
As with any woodworking plan, read through all the construction steps in the Cooler Table and Patio Bench Plan before you start cutting and building.
Diy Picnic Table
For each material and step, start by cutting a half inch from one end of the board. Always do the first step when cutting a new board because it will give you a clean, straight edge to measure against.
During construction, sand each part of the patio table, smoothing all edges, rough corners and sides. Before assembling the table, it is very easy to sand the individual parts.
Most sanding can be done with an orbital sander filled with 120-grit sandpaper. Rough areas may require 80-grit sandpaper.

After sanding each part, we recommend painting that part. It is much easier to paint the entire patio table in sections than to assemble it.
Staining at intermediate assembly intervals (as shown in the woodworking plans) will also help the stain act to protect and waterproof the wood, so your table will withstand the elements.
Pay attention to the pocket and screw holes during construction. Place such a clamp in the first hole to hold the plates together. Screw the krag screw into place.

Continue moving the bracket as each screw is installed to make sure the pieces stay together. This is especially important when building a tabletop for keeping pieces level and even for a flat and level tabletop.
Using 4×4 posts, a table saw, and wood anchors, it's easy to make your own legs. Full details are included in the woodworking plans, but we've included an overview here because it's a popular woodworking tip that saves money on table legs.
Create the leg and then attach it to the table using diagonal braces and screws. This system allows the legs to be removed very easily during storage or transport.
Outdoor Tables You Can Make
Turn the table saw blade 45 degrees to create a flat surface. Make a pencil mark to know where to cut. Set the table saw guide to 2 3/4-in.
Measure and mark the location of the wood anchors on the new flat surface. (They should fit the support brackets installed in the next step.) Using a 7/16-inch drill bit, drill holes about 1 1/2 inches deep.
To attach the legs, make diagonal braces that attach to a baseboard cut from 2×4 with 45-degree angles at each end.

In the center of the diagonal piece, mark the same locations as the wood anchors on the legs and drill holes with a 1/2-inch drill bit. Attach the support to the base plate with the bottom screws, then attach the legs to the diagonal support using screws and washers.
Since we were using Douglas Fir, a softer wood, we decided to use a wood conditioner to get the stain to come out evenly.
After about 15 minutes of applying the conditioner to the wood and wiping off the excess, I applied a base oil interior stain to the wood with a foam brush.

After the stain dried, I applied three coats of this water-based urethane, sanding VERY LIGHTLY between coats with a fine sanding sponge.

Michael writes, “This was my first woodworking project. I started with the benches, then moved on to the table. The benches worked great. I'm glad you mentioned that you didn't pre-cut everything on the table. There were a lot of parts (fridge box lids) that required precise measurement towards the end.

“I used pressure treated pine. It made the table look crazy, but hopefully it will last a long time. Because of the weight of the table, I added heavy duty castors to the bottom. It gave me It allows you to move it without the need to move it.

“The long boards on it were slightly bent. I added pocket screws leading from the fridge box frames to the exterior trim and flush everything. I thought adding screws would help over time.”

Doug writes, “I was looking for a project to build and donate to my daughter's elementary school PTO auction. I decided on this table, but instead of using the flower pots as ice boxes, I made holes in the table the same size as the tray holes on the steam table. The trays come in about 24 different sizes and are made of stainless steel and two types of plastic. They also come with covers and lots of accessories. Be careful, trays can be expensive if you're not careful.
“As well as the rectangular trays, they have adapters so you can use different sized round buckets. Buckets are great for soups, sauces, chili, and the like, but they're also great for filling with ice and holding a few bottles of wine or storage.
