How To Make A Folding Ladder Chair

How To Make A Folding Ladder Chair – Hey Remodelaholics, Scott and the saws on skates are back to do more sawing with you! This time, we’re doing a project that was originally designed by Benjamin Franklin’s ladder chair! It looks like an ordinary chair, but it has a surprise hidden inside. No spoilers here… you have to read to find out more about the surprise!

I love designing and making multifunctional furniture. Just checked out my DIY cat litter box. From the outside, it looks like a regular closet, but open the door and you’ll see a nasty cat litter box neatly hidden away. Or check out my outdoor coffee table and four hidden side tables. It looks like a simple coffee table, but reach under the table, pull out four small side tables and you’ve quadrupled the space for drinks and burgers you’re serving!

This is why I love Ben’s Ladder. It looks like a regular chair, but turn the chair back to the front of the chair and it becomes a ladder. IT’S NOT COOL!

Step Stool Chairs

My version of the Benjamin Franklin Ladder chair has an updated, modern look, but is reminiscent of its original design. An original ladder chair should be made with mortise and dowels, but pocket woodworking makes this project easy to assemble.

Note: I could not find 5/4×2 at my local big box. Instead, I ripped 5/4 × 4 1-1/2″.

Step 2. Cut the front legs. Cut a 22.5 degree angle to the 5/4×3, measure 2-1/8 inches below the angle and make a 90 degree cut. Make one hole for the pocket in the front edge of the train. Repeat with the other train. Make sure you do the right side and the left side.

Step 3. Cut the front diagonal legs. Cut a 22.5 degree angle on the 5/4 × 2, measure 16-1/2 inches and cut a parallel 22.5 degree angle. Measure 13/16 inches on one end and cut at a 90 degree angle. It would be dangerous to make such a cut on a miter saw. I used a band saw for this cut, but you can also use a hacksaw or a hacksaw with a circular saw.
