How To Make Kitchen Chair Cushions With Ties
I had to add some color to my neutral kitchen chairs. These DIY chair cushion covers allow me to change the upholstery quickly and inexpensively depending on the season or need.

My kitchen chair backs are straight, the backs of the seats recline slightly, the pre-made store-bought cushions don’t fit, and
The place I bought the chairs from no longer makes cushions to match the chairs, so I had to make my own custom DIY chair cushions.
I wanted the look of a thick box chair cushion without a border. I don’t like the tube because it’s just a place to collect dust or food.

I don’t like having ties that wrap around the back of the chair to secure the cushion to the chair. I wanted a streamlined look and had to figure out a way to attach the cushion to the chair without using ties.
To find the perfect blue and white fabric for under $50 a yard, I scoured the web and fabric stores in my area. I found the perfect fabric at JoAnn Fabrics in the upholstery fabric department. It was produced by Waverly and is called Seeing Dots.
Bonus…it’s on sale for $8.99 a yard, down from $21.99! ! ! It’s part of their sun protection and shade range, which is another bonus because it cleans up spills and stains easily.

Once I had the fabric, I had to figure out how to make chair upholstery with removable covers so I could easily wash them if needed.
One of the most popular posts on my blog is how to make seamless pillowcases. I was able to make them into chairs, but since the shape of the seat is neither square nor rectangular, it was not easy to make the cushions seamless.
If you sew, I’m sure you have a way to make kitchen chair cushions. My sewing skills are limited. I can sew a straight line, so I found the perfect way to make a chair cushion.
Diy No Sew Reversible Chair Cushions
I did a little bit of both… using my sewing and non-sewing skills to make my pillows. I also used one of the tricks I used when working in retail to keep the pillow secure without the need for a tie.
The great thing about making your own chair cushions is that they fit your chair perfectly. The thick foam from which pillows are made is expensive. If you want to save money, save some money by waiting for the foam to go on sale at your local fabric store like JoAnn Fabrics or Hobby Lobby.
I make my chair cushions into box-like pillows. I also want them to be easy to clean and remove. Sewing zippers is not part of my skill set, I know my limitations, but use safety pins or velcro to close the seams.

1. Glue some sheets of printer paper so you can make a pattern. You want the piece of paper you glued on to be slightly larger than the seat of the chair.
2. Lay the paper on the edge of the table and place the chair upside down on the table. Use a pencil to draw around the seat of the chair. Cut along the line with scissors.
3. Spread the paper over the seat and cut the paper with scissors if necessary to make the paper the same shape and size as the seat. This will be your pattern.

4. Place your pattern on a 2-inch piece of foam. Trace around the pattern with a marker.
5. Cut foam to desired size with large scissors or electric knife. Electric knives make this process quick and easy.
6. I don’t have a picture of how I sewed the 2 quilts together to make the pillow holding bag.

I cut two pieces of batting slightly larger than the sponge I cut and sewed them together with the zipper foot. I use it to keep the wool going smoothly.
The batting can catch on the presser foot, to reduce this, when sewing, place your fingers in front of it to sew to keep the batting flat.
7. Turn the punching bag over so that the seam allowance is on the inside. Put a pillow in it. Fold the pillow first so it’s easier to place in the sandbag.

8. Trim the edge of the absorbent cotton flush with the foam. This open space is behind the cushion on the back of the chair.
If you have sewing skills, you can wrap the wool around the foam and make a zipper on the back of the pillow. I made the backs seamless so that the covers can be easily removed and washed if needed.
9. Cut two pieces of fabric and place them right sides together on the work surface. Place the batting-covered foam on top of the fabric. Place it so that there is more fabric on the bottom edge. You will need this to close the back of the pillow.

13. To create a finished edge on the pillow fabric, fold the raw edge of the fabric over twice and secure with a pin.
3. Match the seams, making sure the seams line up on both sides of the triangle.
5. Cut the top of the triangle above the seam. You have now created a patch. Repeat for each corner.

Again, if you know how to add a zipper, do it here. If you don’t have this skill, it’s easy to close the fabric on the back of the pillow.
To seal the back edge of the upholstery fabric, consider wrapping the gift box without using duct tape or safety pins, or if your chair back is solid without openings.
If you have a step chair with an open back, use velcro to close the back because it will be hidden.

Here I use a retail display trick, the fabric cushions have no ties so they don’t fall off the chairs. I use carpet tape.
Rug tape is a little sticky and not permanent, but it’s “tough” enough to keep the cushion from coming off when you get up and out of the chair.
I find that the more you sit on the chair, the better the bond between the tape and the pad.

2. Center and press the cushion onto the chair. Sit on a chair to help the pad make contact with the tape.
Complete I made 5 covers, making it a small production line. I spent the afternoon making them. Now, if it gets dirty, I can easily remove it and wash it.
Plus, they can swap out the cushion covers for a new color scheme as the seasons change.

I bought a desk at JC Penney 15 years ago. It had a black iron base and a dark walnut top. I painted the wrought iron base white, then painted the top white to match my decorating style.
