How To Make A Clear Resin Table Top – In this project, I will share my experience of creating a clear epoxy resin board for my two-year-old daughter.
The back story is that she likes to follow me in every room and I like having her around. While creating content, I always try to work on the computer. As long as I’m in her eye, that’s enough. I made her a table after a while, but it was too bulky. So this table. For our purposes, this is a children’s table. For others, it would be the perfect nightstand or end table. The same concept can be applied to any surface. The resin I use is desktop epoxy. There are definitely a lot of brands that I have experience with. I used epoxy because it is durable and easy to maintain. The more layers you have, the wetter you can sand to remove scratches.

It was a two-part process. The first topping was the base (I went with white). After pouring the resin onto the workpiece, I used a brush to spread it evenly. It also helps if you are on a flat surface. Now you have to get rid of the bubbles. I tried a heat gun and wasn’t a fan, so I decided on a torch. This part is pretty simple; Start at one end and then work your way to the other. Keep moving the torch, when you’re done it should look like glass. Now start your second pour, adding whatever colors you want to see in the mix. Once you’ve mixed the second container of epoxy, you’ll transfer it to a new container (I used plastic cups). Then you will add your custom colors.

You will find a chart to help you with square footage. Twenty-four ounces of resin was the perfect amount for this 24-inch board.
Epoxy Coffee Table
You will repeat the same process for each infusion. I used unpainted resin for the final layer.

For the second pouring I used the dirty pouring technique. I used a total of five colors, but you can choose the colors you want to see in the final result. I then took a 4 inch piece of pipe and placed it on the white base. Make sure everything is ready and prepared, preferably within 30 to 45 minutes of pouring the base.

Then gently twist the PCV pipe and lift and push it in the desired direction. Rather than figuring it out as you go, it helps if you map out the pattern path first. I was simple; I pushed the resin in one direction and then back. You can try twisting the pipe, zig zag, or whatever you can think of, as you like. You can also bend the workpiece to create movement in the design. Once you get a pattern you like, grab the torch and pop the bubbles. After that, let it sit for 24 hours.
Review your work. If it looks good, you’re good to go. As I said in the video, I ran into a few crashes so I had to deal with them before moving on. If my process had worked in my favor, I would have finished. Adding a coat of clear coat will help, and I still recommend it – especially if you like the design. Adds extra protection to the clear coat. I recommend light sanding with the following: grit 120, 220 and 400, before applying the clear coat.
Remove sand dust with a wet cloth. Make sure the surface is dry. Mix enough resin to cover the top, then pour it onto the work surface. Grab the brush and spread it out, then grab the torch. Let it sit for 24 hours.

For this project I used hairpins to keep things simple. Feel free to go in any direction.

Most times when I see these types of tables, people add coins or bottle caps to the table top and seal it with epoxy to make the surface smooth and hard. I’ve also seen some older (vintage photos) or with sealed menus (I saw this at a bar in Nashville last year). I decided to use personal photos along with some thinly sliced geodes that I bought locally. Since these photos are very visible on the coffee table in our living room, I decided I wanted to use personal photos with an abstract feel. I used some photos from our engagement and wedding, as well as some photos from different places we visited together (San Francisco, Hawaii, and even our hometown). I printed my photos on 13″ x 19″ paper using our Canon PRO-100.

We made a video on how we made our epoxy resin table. While researching different types of epoxy resin products and processes, I watched many videos online. Most of the videos I found either didn’t explain the process well (it usually seemed too vague and left me with a lot of questions), or they were extremely long and made the process seem harder than I thought it should be. . Once I tried it, it wasn’t that hard! So I kept that in mind as we worked to create our video.
Supplies: -Board with 1/4″ (or less) edging around each edge (I wanted to use an old found board but could never find one that fit in our space and had edging around the edge. So Josh made this is super easy for me at the weekend table so it’s exactly as much as I wanted it to fit in our space.) -Photos and objects you want to seal into the table (make sure the items are no higher than the edge of your table) -Spray chain or glue – Glass coat Pour high gloss epoxy* (we used Brand was Famovood) – Disposable paper, plastic cups or small jugs – Disposable stirring sticks (I used a leftover dowel rod) – Disposable gloves (you can also use an apron and goggles) -Put down a drop cloth to cover your work area, spills or drips -masking or painters tape -small hand held propane torch (I used a kitchen torch)
* The amount of epoxy you need depends on how big and deep the area you are covering is. My coffee table is 4′ x 5″ x 16″ with a depth of 3/8″ (from the top of the table to the top edge of the lip). I used 1 gallon and 2 quarts of epoxy resin
