How To Install Additional Power Outlet
To produce 110 volts / 120 volts, you need 3 wires, the green or bare copper is the ground, the white is the neutral, and usually the black or red is the hot (live) wire (my hot is the red wire in this case). At home, you’ll often use Romex wire that you can find at hardware stores. Usually you get 14/2 which means the hot/neutral wire is 14 awg including ground. This type of wire is tough. The wire I use in the garden is 14 awg stranded, which means the wires are in small wire bundles. Strand is easy to use in a commercial setting like a garden.
Connecting Stranded Wire To An Outlet
Be sure to turn off the electricity in your work area. A surprise blow is never easy 🙂
Using your electrical stripper, at the 14 awg mark, strip the wire insulation 1/2″ from the end. This will expose the bare copper wire.
If you’re using stranded wire, it’s easy to insert spade connectors into the bare wire. Pull the connector over the exposed part of your wire and use rubber bands to tighten the wire connector. Pull gently to ensure the connector engages securely. Repeat for each string.
Remove the green ground switch and attach the green tab to the green switch. Tighten the screws.

Note: If you are using solid copper wire, make a small bend in the wire and wrap it around the screw and tighten the screw.
Remove the top silver switch, attach the neutral wire to the silver screw. For standard 110/120 volts, the neutral wire connects to the long hole. Tighten the screws.
If this folder is the last key in your string, you will only use the first key. If you are going to another location, you will use other cable bundles that go to another location.
Then release the gold plug, and connect the hot wire to the gold wire (short end). Tighten the screws.
Tapping Into An Existing Outlet
Now we connect the outlet to the box and fix it by matching the two connecting screws coming from the outside. When you put the wires in the box, make sure the bare ground is not touching any HOT bolts, this will reduce your power and trip your breaker when you open it.
Place the lid on top. We are ready to try it. Flip the breaker and you should be good to go.
