Creating a beautiful, safe and functional outdoor space can make a huge difference in the way you use and enjoy your home. It's a great way to maximize your living space and make the most of the summer weather. Last spring we started work on our backyard, and with the completion of this beautiful outdoor furniture, it is finally taking shape in the space we started (see floor plan -our exterior design).

We dreamed of a backyard that could reflect our style and flow in our home, and with that in mind, we set out to find the perfect outdoor sofa. But we came away empty handed. Most of the sets we found were lacking in some way, be it size, quality or style. And the few sets we found and fell in love with were out of our price range. So we teamed up with our friends at Kreg and Buildsomething.com to build our own, and of course share these plans with you.

Diy Wood Outdoor Furniture Project Ideas

We took many things into consideration before Nick started building this project, from the materials we chose to making sure we thought of the smallest details, we wanted this to be the perfect outdoor sofa. And I am very happy for that

I showed Nick some of my favorite outdoor sofas and he showered me with other items. Like any area in your home, your outdoor living space should reflect your style and flow with the other rooms in your home. This meant we wanted an outdoor sofa that was traditional but modern and fun.

We went with this classic design featuring a modern silhouette with crisp, clean angles that are simple and streamlined.

This was another big decision for us. Like most families, our budget always comes first, so we've considered our options. We could use standard wood or pressure treated wood, and while the cost was definitely in the budget, we knew the quality and durability wouldn't be there.

Nick also considered cedar as an option, which will provide more durability to the material, and will look good for many years to come (with proper maintenance). But it was a big jump in price, more than double the cost of pressure treated and five times the price of equivalent wood.

We decided to choose cedar, even though it was more expensive, but we wanted to make sure that these pieces would last a long time. Cedar was definitely the best choice, it's beautiful and strong and we know we won't be replacing this outdoor sofa anytime soon.

And found the sofa sleeper perfect both in terms of comfort and design. He didn't want it to be obvious that the seat and back of the sofa were reclined when he first looked at it. This was a deliberate attempt to help keep the modern look we wanted.

We also put a lot of thought into the finish we're going to use. Nick considered using color for the desks and furniture, but we didn't like the idea of it peeling and something that looked a little out of place with the look we were going for. He did a little research and decided to use an oil-based penetrating wood stain. This helps keep the cedar from turning gray as it provides UV protection, helps repel water, and won't peel when exposed to the elements. It is also a one-handed process and will not require much effort if the furniture needs another application next year.

Once Nick finished building the sofa, I couldn't wait to assemble it with the cushions and pillows we bought so we could see the final look and test how comfortable it was. As we all know, furniture can look beautiful, but it also needs to be comfortable.

These outdoor cushions we bought for the sofa and chair are absolutely perfect. They have a nice color and keep their shape very well (these are two similar options here and here). Add these striped pillows and a textured lumbar pillow to complete the look.

It has already been put through its paces and will surely be the perfect place to sunbathe.

And while you're at it why not build a patio bar, great for hosting outdoor gatherings or as a BBQ prep station. It seems that everyone is always focused on the interior decoration of their homes, but what about the yard? ? Here in AZ we spend a lot of time alone, maybe not this time of year, so why doesn't that sound GREAT? So when my friends at Kregas asked me to collaborate on a BuildSomething.com project, I was excited to design and build a piece that would bring our backyard to life. And it adds much needed living space! Right now we have a couple of plastic adirondack chairs that have seen a summer or so in AZ, if you know what I mean.
