How To Make Epoxy Wood Table
I always start my project by creating a template to help me visualize my final schedule. Your form doesn’t need anything fancy. I usually use an old 1″ x 1″ scrap that I have lying around. For the best look, make your template so that the inside of the template is the same size as your end table.

Once you have your template, take your time choosing a design. Even if you think you know exactly how you want to direct it, take a few minutes and play around with other ideas by moving the boards, rotating the boards, or placing other pieces. If you’re stuck with your design, you’ve been inspired in the past by looking at aerial photos of real rivers, and this is especially useful when you place islands in your river or other areas, for example.

When your design is complete, trace your shape onto the boards with chalk or pencil. I mark 2″ lines along the length and width. This way I have an inch of room for error on either side. How To Make An Epoxy Resin Table — Blacktail Studio
I have a good man shop. I’m lucky enough to be able to afford tools that your average DIYer can’t justify. One of these tools is the Festool chainsaw. This makes some tasks much easier, such as cutting these boards to size, which is not necessary. I assume a circular saw of some sort is needed. You can do this with a jig saw or hand saw, but it will be more difficult.
Whether you’re using a jigsaw, a hacksaw, or a regular circular saw, cut along the lines you’ve marked. Don’t worry about making it absolutely perfect. After pouring the epoxy the board is cut to its final size. However, the cleaner and straighter these cuts are, the less epoxy you will need.
You only want to make your table out of good wood. No soft or moldy wood. Unfortunately, great pieces for such boards often have rot spots, large knot holes or other parts. The good news is that when working with epoxy, you can always fill a void or depression with resin.

For smooth bark and spots, all you need is a chisel and a dull hammer. Go into town to get more of it. My favorite tool for cleaning baseboards is an angle grinder with a stainless wire wheel. One of the reasons I like angle grinders and wire wheels is that they remove all the soft wood and leave all the hardwood. I also use small nylon wheels attached to my drill bit for slicks. The Porter Cable Restorer is actually a very good tool for the money. A stainless wheel is strong enough to remove rotten wood. Their nylon wheel is gentle enough to remove light materials without even marking wood. FYI, the stainless wheels on the grinder and refinishing will leave light marks on the wood.
I’ve heard that using a nut shell is the best way to go, but it’s a tool I haven’t been able to add to my arsenal yet.
This step is for some discussion. I’ve talked to a few good resin board makers who choose to skip this step. However, I always close my edges. The main reason for not sealing the edges is that you get a good bond without sealing them. This is because the resin has the potential to penetrate the wood during curing. The main reason for sealing the edges is to prevent staining that can occur as the colored resin penetrates the wood. Especially light forests. Powder colors don’t smudge nearly as well as liquid colors if you decide not to seal your edges. Another benefit of sealing the edges of your clear boards is that you get far fewer bubbles in the epoxy. Air is trapped in the raw wood and if you don’t seal your edges, the air will escape and become trapped in the final epoxy composition. You often hear about people having problems with “small bubbles”. The seal greatly reduces the number of small bubbles.

I have changed my sealing method in the last year or so. I worked with the folks at Epoxy Liquid Glass to get edge seal protection, to get an edge-free seal bond.
I completely seal the top, bottom and sides with the same deep seal epoxy I’m using on my river piece. Usually with a disposable brush or sponge roller. Nothing here, just cover the whole part(s). Then I let this epoxy cure for about 12-18 hours. At this point, the epoxy is partially set and tacky, but not hard. Meaning, it’s cured enough to resist smearing and air sealing, but sticky enough that we can still get a good “chemical” bond. Unlike my previous method of sealing with epoxy, let it cure completely, crack lightly, and then pour. This is called a “mechanical” connection.
However, you need to set the time carefully. So I recommend getting everything else ready to pour before this step.

I make my shapes out of melamine. They are very cheap and readily available from Home Depot and I usually get through 2-3 boards before I throw them away.
All you have to do is build a box the size you want for your end table with the pillow you added. If I want a 96″ x 42″ finished board, I cut my boards 98″ x 44″ and build my box to 98″ x 44″. I add at least 2 inches to my siding over the thickness of the boards. So if my boards are 2 inches thick, I cut a 4-inch side.
