I promised to share a tutorial on how to make small Adirondack chairs with craft sticks (like popsicle sticks). With the chaos of summer and all the kids at home, I needed a little more than I thought I could muster. But here it is: our step-by-step guide to making beautiful beach chairs for a mini garden.

I definitely needed another set of hands. I also didn’t want everything to dry completely before moving on to the next step, which made it that much more difficult. Two pieces came off because they weren’t completely dry before I moved on. So, I got so involved in the project that I forgot to take a picture for you.

I started painting all my works, but it would be better to wait until the end to paint everything. I should have gone back and painted a few things at the end, like the cut ends. I painted my piece blue. If I make another painting in the future, I can create a fresh effect with the painting. Paint the tree, then immediately wipe it off with a paper towel. It gives a good effect.
I started by making the different parts of the seat, then glued the different parts and finished with the additional parts. The first piece I made was the back of a chair. You want to place 5 popsicle sticks next to each other. Next, stack the popsicle sticks so that they are highest in the middle and then gradually lower. Try to balance both sides. Once the spines are to your liking, take a pencil and draw a straight line on the bottom of the popsicle stick. My line was made with only the bottom of the middle popsicle stick cut off. Once you have your line, you will want to cut each popsicle stick along that line. Once they are all cut out, glue the entire popsicle stick to the back of the 5 cut out popsicle sticks to hold it together. This piece will be glued on both sides, so try to glue so that both sides have about the same amount of glue. These will be the other hands. I stuck this piece in about the middle of my 5 popsicle sticks.
Next I made the bottom of the seat. When making the next piece, you will need to use the back piece you just made for some measurements. You will need 5 more popsicle sticks. Measure the bottom of the back of the chair you just made and cut these 5 new slats to that length. To do this, I put a popsicle stick on the chair and marked it with a pencil. When measuring and marking the extra pieces on both sides, I recommend placing the popsicle sticks in the center of the seat back, as you don’t want these popsicle sticks to have rounded corners. So you will need to cut each popsicle stick twice. Now that you have those 5 slices, grab two more popsicle sticks. They will go sideways. This is where an extra set of hands really comes in handy. I glued four of the five cut popsicle sticks to the two new sticks. I started at the front and put small spaces between each one. I measured the distance, putting the first things before the glue.

After they are glued in place, glue the fifth popsicle stick, which is also cut to the desired size. This part also holds the back of the chair, so make sure there is extra space between it and the other boards to fit the back of the chair. Once it’s glued in place, glue the seat back directly onto it. Note that the seat reclines slightly, so recline the backrest accordingly. With one hand I held the back at the angle I wanted and with the other hand I held the front of the seat at the angle I wanted the seat to be.
Next are the edges of the seats. You will need two uncut sticks and two uncut popsicle sticks. The two cut popsicle sticks on either side of the chair will be next to the first popsicle stick you placed on the chair seat. The bottom and top of these popsicle sticks need to be cut off. To determine how much I wanted to cut, I placed two uncut pieces of wood in a piece attached to the back of the chair. Then they become the arms of the chair. Inverted sticks are those that keep the hands in place and at an angle. So once I measured where my hand wanted to go and drew a line where I would cut the popsicle stick. First I cut off the bottom of the tray stick so I wouldn’t have to worry about adding them to the calculations/measurements. Once everything is cut out, glue them in place. Apply glue wherever one popsicle touches another stick.
The back is the front of the seat. It’s mostly for looks, but it really pulls the department together. I took a popsicle stick and put it in and then marked
