How To Build Sturdy Table Legs – Farmhouse Table: This is a classic that has been around for centuries, made as needed by farmers using the same rough lumber used in barns. Fast forward a few hundred years and this classic farmhouse dining table is still strong and durable. Many farmhouse tables are now made from reclaimed barn lumber, which is a great way to reuse old wood. This trend has become so popular that old barn wood is now rare and expensive as homeowners look to use it in many furniture designs. I live in a 1740's saltbox farmhouse and I can almost guarantee that at some point we will have a barn wood farmhouse table in our house. As a nod to history, I made an unfinished barnwood table from new wood for our dining room, and I'm sharing the plans here.
How To Build Sturdy Table Legs
Historically, farm tables have been very basic in design, with wooden tops and square legs, all hewn and crafted with very primitive tools. I made this faux barn wood table with the same basic design idea, using off-the-shelf wood – nothing complicated, just a solid wood table with beautiful black powder-coated hardware.

At the short end, you will see black studs, which are really the pure decoration of this table. Hundreds of years ago, these “breadboard” end plates were thinner and generally joined using a similar method. I love the black studs with black corners on the footboard.
This table can seat 4 to 6 people comfortably depending on the size of your chairs. If you want a more permanent seat on the ends, consider using a thicker breadboard or extending the middle board. Since this table is in the middle of our dining room—the main entrance to our home—we don't use the last seat unless absolutely necessary.
To get the look of untreated wood, I added some paint to the surface using a dry brush technique. Ultimately, the finish is up to you; How you want wood to look and feel in your home is a personal choice. When I was thinking about my renovation, I thought that naturally a lot of the barn had been painted – so there was probably old paint on the boards used to make the table. And this style is very suitable for our decoration style.

In the plan below I use dowels to make a joinery table. Alternatively, you can use dominoes. I would avoid biscuits because the 2×10 is a large and heavy board and needs something big to support it. Additionally, I removed the curved edges typically found on 2x boards to create sharp, flat edges that ensure the boards fit together smoothly.
Step 1: Attach the table boards using dowels (or dominoes) and glue. Consider removing the rounded edges to create sharp, flat edges with more surface area to attach to the board. Fix and dry.
Step 2: Trim the ends of the table and use pins to attach the ends of the breadboard. Apply glue to the tabletop pins; There is no glue except for a pin on one side of the breadboard. Make dowel holes on both sides of the breadboard (except one) to allow the wood to move. With the breadboard in place, secure the dowel into the drilled dowel with a vertical ¼” dowel, gluing only the last ¼”.

Fix the length and let dry, then use a multi-tool with a casting to wash out any ¼-inch dowels.
Step 3: Attach the legs to the short apron using wood glue and 2½” pocket hole screws. Hold the apron ¾” from the front edge. Make two.
Step 4: Secure the long apron to the legs using wood glue and 2½-inch pocket-hole screws. Hold the apron ¾ inch from the front edge.

Step 6: Make a semi-circular joint on top of the short end cross brace. Attach the legs using APA4 90 point 3½” construction wood screws and hex head washers.
