By searching the internet one can find many variations, designs and designs. Some designs are harsh and others are too stylish for my taste. Some plans are available for purchase and some are free, but lack important information or dimensions. I went with this partial plan I found on google image search. I made wings that were not big enough.

Most of the chairs are made of high quality cedar. I kept costs down and used 5/4 x 6 cedar boards for the chair legs and arms and standard pine 1×4 for the railings and chair brackets. I used ¼”x3″ stainless steel bolts with washers and nuts to attach the legs and arm pieces. I used 1¼-inch #6 stainless square screws to attach the seat and back rails.

I used brown paper to create the chair design. On the paper, I drew a 1″ x 1″ grid with brackets, large enough to accommodate one hand and one foot in the ink pen. Using the dimensions provided, I transferred the drawing to the grid. These French curves were useful for drawing the curved parts of the legs.

I don’t need a pattern for lines and vertical support elements. I cut the paper designs to transfer to the cedar boards.

I drew the patterns on the wood and cut them with a saw. For the angled surface of the brackets, I bent the table on the band saw.

When it came to cutting the vertical support members and back rails, I found that the dimensions were small. I raised the front upright by 21 1/2 inches, the rear upright by 31 inches, and the rear rail by 36 inches. I also tapered the back strips ½ inch from the bottom.

I cut a table top to 1 x 4 for the taper and cut over the overhangs after mounting. I only knew the size and shape of the small part of the armrest.

After all the wood was cut, I rounded the edges with a 3/8″ round bit on the router table.

When assembling the chair, it was very helpful to use a large carpenter’s square to make sure the uprights were vertical. I also used this protractor tool to adjust the angle of the legs on the vertical support.

Once the corners were in place, I joined the wood together and drilled holes for the carriage bolts that connect the uprights and uprights. The legs were braced, then the back supports were attached to keep the chair square.

Next, I attached all the seats, leaving room for the back bars – and then I attached the rear bars. All screw holes are pre-drilled for countersunk holes in the top of the wood. I found that I had to be careful when gluing the back pieces together with the bracket.

I could have used 4/5″ cedar instead of ¾” pine for the braces. I also noticed that some of the corner sizes on the edges of the seats seemed to be off. I just looked at the corners.

Once the seat was assembled, I marked the top of the back pieces for cutting (with a bevel or something I thought) and then took everything apart for final cutting, sanding and painting. When reassembling the seat, make a mark in an inconspicuous place to make sure the parts fit correctly.

In the first sitting, I applied Min-Wax Cherry just one more time to the reliefs. I used two coats on the second chair. I then sealed the entire wood with a 50/50 mixture of mineral spirits and Varatan exterior spar urethane.

After drying, I applied several layers of teak oil, which is probably unnecessary. I wish I could have stuck with more layers of the 50/50 mix. After a few days, after everything had dried, I put the chair back together to use as a guide for the next chair.
