How To Make A Round Concrete Table Top – Ever since I discovered my tulip chair and read that Eero Saarinen designed his foundation collection to treat the “foot slums” he observed under tables and chairs, I’ve been looking at our house a little differently. When I started looking for a table to put between two chairs in my living room, I knew I had to choose one that didn’t make my legs look too long.

After months of fruitless hunting, I decided to show my happiness with a bathroom trash can, a $5 giant table from Craigslist, and a generous helping of Ardex Feather Finish (pictured left). But let’s reserve a little. What I started with was “before”. I took off the table legs and removed the brackets. After sliding the trash can onto the tabletop, Cam cut the plywood disc that stuck to the trash can. We did this to prevent the plastic from bending and the concrete from breaking. I drill a hole and then screw the side of the bin into the wooden disc.
Once everything is in place, use an orbital sander to rough up the plastic and wood, then put a tarp in the living room, mix Ardex Feather Finish and use a putty knife to cover the base of the table. Working on a circular vertical surface was a new challenge. The first coat was too heavy to apply and the texture was uneven. After it dried, I sanded it thoroughly. After cleaning it, I applied a second coat, let it dry and sanded it again (this table will stretch out over a few days). Then I turned it over and smoothed out the bits that stuck to the edges with a scraper. Then I put a dollop of Ardex on top and gave it two coats compared to the base (again between drying and sanding). It was hard to get the rounded edges clean, but I found that I could smooth them out with my fingers while they were wet. After everything was dry, I did the final sanding, cleaned it up and applied Minwax Polyacrylic as a sealer. Here he is, my sweet little Bob. It’s not exactly family heirloom quality (it’s made out of plastic bottles and all), but we’re happy with how this table turned out. It’s durable, perfect for your room, and only costs $5. As the warmer weather approaches, we’ve been looking for ways to update the space under the outdoor pavilion. There was a nice table and chair that I found on Facebook Marketplace for $50. The table already had a clean base with minimal black metal legs, but the glass tabletop always looked dirty. As a base, I wanted to create a new tabletop that would look interesting and unique.

I’ve been looking for outdoor concrete furniture (indoors!) for a few seasons now, and a concrete table top is the perfect solution. Once the direction of this DIY project was decided, making a concrete table top was a very simple process.
To start, I bought a sheet of ¾” pressure treated plywood and cut it to size for the tabletop. ).
For the framing around the table, I used regular 1″x2″ boards and nailed the edges to give it a smooth look. I knew I was going to cover it with concrete so I wasn’t worried about using regular wood.

I mixed the self leveling concrete according to the package directions and mixed it thoroughly with a drill mixer. I started with a trowel and found the mixture too thick, so thinning it with more water made the concrete much easier.
I recommend a thin pancake batter consistency! This will allow the concrete to be poured and run along the edge of the plywood table top. It felt more natural to do this instead of scraping the concrete to the edges. I paint the concrete twice and let it dry in between. This means mixing new concrete for the second application. I had to go back and fix the part where the concrete was thin and the plywood was visible.

How To Make A Concrete Fire Feature
Once I was happy with the look of the concrete countertop, I used an orbital sander and 60-grit sandpaper to smooth out the rough spots.
I cleaned the concrete very well with a cloth and applied concrete sealer to the table top. I use a matte finish sealer so it doesn’t have too much shine, but just enough low shine to bring out the natural beauty of the concrete.
Finally, I attached the table top to the legs using pipe clamps, so this concrete table top isn’t going anywhere! How to fasten the upper part of the leg depends on the shape of the base.

The best thing about putting a thin layer of concrete over plywood is that you get the look of concrete without the weight of the entire board. This makes it easier to create the table if you need to do it later.
Again, DIY was the way to go! I saved hundreds of dollars by recycling the used parts and only spent $186.00 including the cost of the table.
