How To Wire Electric Radiator Fan – Connecting a cooling fan to a car looks scary. I spent a lot of time surfing the web trying to find out how other people were doing. This investigation revealed a lot of bad wiring and bad ways of wiring the fans. I thought it would be best to dig into the wiring diagram and figure out how the OEM fan module is supposed to work. After drawing more than 10 different ways to connect the fan, I found the easiest way to work. No need for additional controllers or constant fans.

This is mainly for cars that don’t have cables yet, restorations, race cars etc. If your car already has an electric fan, the hard work is done. Pictured above is an example of different types of electric fans (some unclassified). Fan wiring diagrams range from the simplest to the most complex to help you learn. Electrical Wires This is actually the main focus of this page. Editing is left as an exercise for the reader (remember you are from school!). You don’t need a lot of tools, just a good wiring harness and the usual tools in your mechanic’s box. Parts you may need include wiring (both heavy duty power style and light duty control relays), motor relays, contactors, temperature controlled switches or any of the popular high tech style electronic controllers. ah now. To connect an electric fan, you need to follow some basic rules about electricity, but it’s easy. Here are some important tips before we get started – Use the correct size wire for your current system. Use fuses or circuit breakers to keep your car (or truck) from burning to the ground in a short circuit. Avoid cutting and shorting the wires (see note above about fuses) Make sure all electrical connections are clean, tidy and tight Let’s get to some parts (well, except the fan) before we go. Commonly Used Automotive Relays Above are some common relays you may find in automotive applications. The most important thing to keep in mind is how much power your fan system will draw. A 10-inch fan can draw between 5 and 20 amps! If you use 2 fans, fuse size, relay capacity and wiring is even more important. Last transmission on the left – a standard automatic transmission from Bosch. You are looking for a good quality amplifier (not a cheap 20 amp as in the picture). These are the most popular and easiest to install. Central Transmission – This is for high current fan systems. The relay is rated at 70 amps and has a soldered connection that may require some work to correct. The small amount of extra work will pay off though, as this transmission will have no problem with most fan systems. I personally love the assembly and placement of this transmission. This is the one I use in my cars – a Tyco 70 Amp Relay. They’re a bit more expensive, but it’s a quality piece with a lot of power, which is good for fans as they seem to be hard to replicate. Correct relay – this is model 70A. I’m not a big fan of this because the main power supply is very different and not easy to find. They work well and fit in a small space, but not a big fan (see figure). Amazon has them like many other places but you have to make sure the 2 terminals are shaped like FAT legs, everything else isn’t shaped like 70A. They are more expensive than Tyco relays. Warning: Some relays come with sockets already wired. Unless the wire size is stamped on the wire or you can confirm the wire size, you should be wary of a cheaply made harness connection. It’s better to make your own connector if you can’t find a high-quality connector to match your high-performance transmission. Play it safe and check what you are using.
Fan control with 2 speeds. Seeing what’s going on, you’d say it’s not really two speeds, but actually two levels, one fan, or two fans at full speed. You’re right, but I’m not sure anyone will understand the concept of “2 levels of speed control”. However, this is a somewhat complicated circuit, kind of. The idea of this case is to change the control if one fan, one fan or two fans are not running. This is done with 2 relays of the power amplifier suitable. The little triangle above the switch is the DIODE. This prevents the current from flowing in one direction and allows it to flow in the other direction. The unit costs 25 cents (units 1N4001 – 1N4007 can be used). Some modifications to this circuit could replace the ground side of the circuit instead of the 12V source side (ask if you need this I can make it and ship it to you) Features If you had a SPDT switch it has 3 positions, left, center and right. In the middle position there is no contact on either side and both fans are off. Completing the circuit on the LOW side of the relay only turns on the right fan. If you connect the UP side of the switch, BOTH relays will operate and both fans will turn on.
Top – Some solutions with fan fuses. You have several options when making fuses or switches. Opportunities are only
Far left – This is the Maxi-Fuse wiring harness. This is a must! Nice thick wire and waterproof housing

Make this a cheap linear fuse holder. Maxi fuses are available from 20-100 amps, your choice
Middle – ATO/ATC type vehicle fuse next to the Maxi fuse. The ATO system can be used (with
Suitable in-line holder) for low-current fuses. As you can imagine, I prefer the Maxi-Fuse. It can be found in different types
Usually – this is a reasonable option, a direct replacement. I’m not really interested in automation

If the fan is rated at 10 amps, that is usually the current. At launch, fans will be able to afford more amps for good
Margin. For most fans you should start with a 20A fuse. This works with fans between 10-12A
