How To Make A Tray Table

How To Make A Tray Table – This is an easy project – if you usually shy away from DIY things, you might want to give this a try! As long as you can glue, you can make this cute little tray.

So I’m going to show you the easiest way to make a small Lego tray, and then another option that’s a little fancy. The first option costs about $5 and the second option costs about $12 plus the cost of the baseplate.

I wanted to make a lego tray because my girls love lego but don’t play with it very often. I originally intended to use this little Ikea table we have that looks like this:

They’re about $20 and I thought it might be fun to glue a base plate to them. The girls just play with Lego a lot, so I decided I didn’t want to do all the furniture. Also, I’m one of those people who gets itchy when there’s too much “stuff”. I like it when everything is out of sight when not in use – especially toys.

We actually went through a few revisions of this project and I’m happy with the final product, so I’ll share the mistakes we made so you can avoid them.

On a recent trip to Lowe’s I noticed these little pieces of pre-cut wood. These cost $4-5 for this size and are the perfect square for a Lego tray! These are 24″ x 24″ so you don’t even have to cut the board. One of the caveats is that you want to pre-sand the plywood and try to get as close to 1/2″ as possible. The one I originally bought was closer to 1/4″ and it sagged after painting and gluing little through. Buy thicker pieces from the start to ensure the bottom is flat.

So I just painted the wood white and then glued the (4) base plates to the board with Gorilla Glue.

There’s a little trick for that. Luckily my husband was in charge of the glue and noticed that when you glue the base plates together they don’t match the lego bricks. You need a little space so what he did was right in the middle (4) of the base plate and he put some bricks on top of the plate and flipped it onto the end of some glue then flipped it over and glued it onto that Plywood. If you place the lego bricks on the base plate as shown below, you will have the right place.

About an hour after gluing, place something heavy on these base plates to weigh them down. Large books or heavy items you have in the garage are perfect.

What I like about it is that it is very simple and easy. I want something that fits in the closet or under the sofa. That definitely fits. Children can easily carry this and you can fold it up and use it to create puzzles or games or a dollhouse.

So I was perfectly happy with this little tray, but then my husband, Tim the tool man, decided it needed some refreshment.

So he cut off the two sides of the plywood and built a small frame around it to make more trays.

So the plywood we originally bought was about 1/4″. We chose to glue the second sheet on top to make it thicker and avoid the Small arch in wood. If you buy thicker pieces to begin with, you don’t have to worry about this problem.

We cut pieces of plywood to fit snugly on the base plate. The base will be wrapped 20″ x 20″ after cutting.

This time we had to cut the frame out of plywood, which cost about $2.00 at Lowe’s. Originally we used about 3 inch strips and cut them to the base and then screwed them onto the base. There are screws on the bottom of the base and I’m worried they will scratch the floor and table and I want the base to be a flat surface for other uses… soooo we’ll do it again 😉 .

This time I have 2″ lumber and we are cutting (2) pieces at 21″ and (2) pieces at 20″. Instead of laying the frame on the base and screwing it, we place the base in the frame and use small finishing nails to nail it to the base.

I think it looks a bit nicer now and because of the narrower side it fits, so much for small hands.

After that I just glued to the edge of the base plate, put a bit of wood in the hole and let it give another coat of paint. If necessary, you can sand a little. If you paint before assembling the parts it will be a little easier.

After a quick coat of paint I got out my silhouette and cut out the “build” in vinyl and popped it on the side. If you don’t have a silhouette, these podge mods let you just leave it, paint the sides, or print pictures from the web.

And viola! Finished! This rests perfectly on our little Ikea table and is great for when the kids are in the process of building something that we can pick up and store without ruining their hard work.

Another good thing is that you have a flat surface, so you can work on the carpet, or outside on the grass, or on the sofa, or wherever you want.

The other advantage of this tray is that I can fold it up to have a perfectly flat surface. This is perfect for playing games, cars, dolls, puzzles and more… We always have a moving surface for whatever we want to do.

I think this would make a great gift for a child if you tend to do more than that. I checked the store and there don’t seem to be many options for Lego trays and tables.

For a total value of $32.08, or just $12.12 for materials if you already have the baseplate. I used the colors we have, but the sample colors are about $2.50. So this is a very expensive project. Hi everyone, this is Anna from Annabode + Co. Again! I wanted some modern and minimalist furniture in our new home in Denver, which is why I’m excited to share this DIY side table with you. I’ve wanted this beautiful bowling table from Leibal for a while, but it’s seriously out of my budget. (Wow!

It’s up to you whether you want a sandbox or not. I personally don’t like the light finish and dark colors so I decided to leave it. If you’re ok with it, it’s easier to use an 80-grit random-orbit sander and 220-grit paper, and then sand the inside edges by hand. It took longer but I think it was worth it in the end. Then apply the stain with a rag and let it dry.

Next, use your angle drill guide set at 30 degrees to drill three holes in the center of your scraper, about 2-3 inches apart. Start with a small drill bit and drill a pilot hole for each, then work up to a 7/16 inch drill bit.

Cut the scrap wood so you have three square pieces, each corner with a hole. As you can see I was lazy to make them too, but that’s not part of the design.

Next, put some glue on the inside of each hole. Then take a stick or a rubber stick and beat these kids into pieces of wood. So the book. They want them to be SNUG. Then let it dry.

This is where it can get tricky. If you have a protractor or other angle tool, you can place each leg at a 120 degree angle, equidistant from the center to the bottom of the tray.

Or if you’re like me, you can take the tape off the feet and place them where you think they should be, then flip the table a few times to check it’s level. Which way do you think you will choose…

When you have the leg where you want it, mark the spot with a pencil. Fill the remaining space between the dowel and the bottom of the scraper with more glue, then screw the feet in place. Be careful not to damage the surface of the tray!
