Local blog friend Julie Blanner asked me if I could make a cover for an IKEA HENRIKSDAL bar stool. He bought three new ones for his kitchen renovation and wanted counters that matched his style. All the tops on the market lacked the sleek, tailored feel he was looking for.
I had never sewn a Parsons chair cover before, but I knew I was up for the challenge. After all, it doesn’t get tougher than a wingback chair cover!

I started by pulling the top over the top of the chair, right side down. I checked to make sure it was pulled evenly around and the straps were straight.
After sewing the side panels, I added the seat piece, making sure all the straps lined up.

My sister has a dining room ready for a long time. Although the chair frames are in good condition, the microfiber seat cushions are stained, watery and impossible to clean.

First, you need to measure the chair and record the measurements. For comparison, you can also see the image below to see how I measured my chair. Here are some benchmarks and other things to consider:
For measurement points that deviate from this, you can adjust the chair cover pattern to be printed. For example, if the back of the chair is only 20 inches high, reduce the height of the pattern piece by 3 inches using a pencil and ruler. Cut the pattern when sewing from a dress pattern that is too long.
Next, create a pattern for the edge of the chair cover. This is a long rectangular piece that wraps around the chair and is sewn to the seat and back cover.
How To Make Dining Room Chair Slip Covers
Print the cover pattern on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper without scaling. Line up the edges of the paper and create the finished pattern pieces and glue together. Cut the fabric around each individual pattern. The cover consists of three model parts: the back of the chair, the seat and the bottom.
Lay a piece of fabric on a flat surface and place the individual pattern pieces on top of the fabric, lining up the grain.
Pin the pattern to the fabric (or use a paperweight) and then use scissors to cut along the solid lines. As mentioned above, recommend scrap fabric to create the pattern before using the actual fabric.

With right sides together, fold the back piece in half over the top edge. Sew the raw edges together leaving a ½” gap from top to bottom and line up the sides.
Create space for the back of the chair by creating a triangle shape in the top corner as shown and making a 1 inch long stitch across the width.
Turn the sewn piece inside out and place it on the back of a chair to see how it fits.
Dining Room Chair Covers Free Patterns
If everything looks good, go ahead, but if it looks too big, too small, or too small, adjust the shield pattern and do it again.
Next, sew the right sides of the seat piece together to the back of the chair using a ½” seam allowance. Remember to center the seat piece (and match the dots).
Place the cover over the chair to test the fit again before continuing to sew the hem. If the fit looks good, keep sewing, but if the seat looks too big, too small, or maybe the wrong size, adjust the pattern accordingly and test the fit again by making the pattern again.

Fold the bottom edge ½” and press in place with an iron, then fold the edge again ½” and press in place. Then fold and press the short edges of the long ½” rectangular edge piece. Fold and press again, then edge with a ½” inch seam. Also sew the bottom hem with a ½” border along the entire length of the hem.
Line the skirt and seat piece right sides together and sew the pieces together if necessary.
Start sewing the pieces with a ½” seam at CF (Center Front) and knit at CB (Center Back). Be extremely careful at all corners to turn. Hem the hem slightly at all turning points so that the fabric forms a 90-degree angle and avoid creases or folds in the corners of the fabric.

Repeat on the other unstitched side, starting at CF and ending at CB. The back of the skirt overlaps.
