When installing box beams, it is important to have ceilings of at least standard height. The studs don’t need to be very deep to hide the wires, but if they’re too shallow, they won’t look right. A depth of 4 to 5 inches is the minimum to ensure proper functionality and appearance.
Measure the size of your room to determine the space for the ceiling joists. Check for drafts from the walls for window frames, mantels, doors, etc. that prevent box joists from reaching the walls.
If this can be a problem, it is best to build drip soffits on these walls. For a professional look, frame and finish soffits with drywall to the same depth as the box joists. These soffits can be a great place to highlight these walls.
