I started my DIY smart home den of denial with a simple question: “Do you have a neutral wire in your house?”
The folks at Brilliant Smart Home Systems wanted to know if their aptly named control panel would work in my house. Although I know about wiring problems in older homes, I never thought about whether mine was wired correctly before ordering a new outlet.
In terms of home power, the neutral wire provides the return path for current required by most modern electrical systems in the United States. Combined with the power supply and ground wire, you have a modern lighting brand, but the original neutral switch. So when it comes to designing a smart home, neutral wiring can be a headache when you lack flexibility. Or if you don’t know if you have it, like me.
Most homes built after the 1980s have all neutral wires, case sealed. But my house was built in the mid-1980s, which means the wires behind the walls can run both ways—a confusion the Jetsons would never have, I’m sure. So, to answer the brilliant question and find out if my decision to use smart plugs instead of smart lights backfired, we broke down.

According to my crash course in Wiring 101, thanks to the day I shadowed this electrician, not having neutral wires in our switches isn’t the end of the world. If you’re interested in any smart home device that’s mains powered (aka not sourced), you need to know if a) you have it and b) your desired device needs it.

The easiest way to tell if you have a neutral wire in your breaker is to know when your house was built or when it last underwent major remodeling. If it happened after 1990, chances are you have neutral wiring around your house. If this was done before 1980, you may not have the neutral wire needed to make a smart switch.
If your house was built in the 1980s, things are not clear. Not the era of controversial John Hughes movies, the 1980s was a transitional period for electrical standards. A 1985 New York Times article titled “Home Improvements” discusses changes to new building principles.
To check if you have a neutral wire, you can open the switch box in your house if you know how to do it properly (you can even have an electrician do this). If you see a white wire coming out of the junction box, you probably have a neutral wire.
If your switch box does not have a neutral wire, you have two options. First, you can have an electrician install it. Our electrician said it wasn’t a difficult task, but they had to go back to your walls. Since we are opening ours to upgrade, using the neutral wire for the devices I want is not a problem.

A non-destructive option is to use any smart light bulb or smart switch that operates without a neutral wire. A few years ago, many companies did not address the various wiring problems of older homes. But now you can find good models that allow your mind to remain neutral.
Most smart devices still require a neutral wire to complete the circuit and be powered 24 hours a day. A great smart home, for example, needs constant effort to fulfill its role as a wall display for managing a collection of connected devices.
