They were building 2 new turkey sheds and had a time crunch, desperate times requiring desperate measures 🙂 So I helped him install all the systems in the shed. The system includes multiple power lines, feed lines, water and sprinkler lines, natural gas and heating lines, fans, motors, etc., etc., etc. a lot of work!
As I was installing the power jack I thought I’d take some pictures for instructions. The drawings are for industrial settings, but similar techniques apply for home use. You can never have enough outlets, right! Sometimes you just need to add one here and there in the house/garage.
How To Wire A Socket From Another Socket
To connect a 110v/120v receptacle you need 3 wires, copper is green or bare ground, white is neutral, and usually black or red is the hot (carrier) wire (in this case my Hot is the purple wire). At home, you usually use Romex cable which can be purchased at a hardware store. Typically you’ll get 14/2 which means the hot/neutral wire gauge is 14 awg and includes bare ground. This type of wire is solid. The cable I use in the field is 14 awg cable, meaning it comes in small cable bundles. Stranding is easier to use in industrial environments such as farms.

Be sure to turn off the power at the switch panel in the area where you are working. Surprise surprises are never nice 🙂
Using electrical tape, at the 14 awg mark, strip the insulation from the wire about 1/2 inch from the end. It exposes bare copper wire.
If you’re using stranded wire, it’s easiest to install spade fittings on the bare wire. Slide the connector onto the bare portion of the cable and use the notch of the crimp to press the connector onto the cable. Gently pull on the connector to make sure it is seated properly. Repeat for each wire.
Unscrew the green ground screw and connect the green spade to the green screw. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

Note: If using solid copper wire, make a small loop in the wire and wrap it around the screw threads and tighten the screw.
Unscrew the top silver screw, connect the neutral wire to one of the silver screws. In a standard 110/120 volt outlet, the neutral wire connects to the long plug hole. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.
If this receptacle was the last of the wired plugs, you’d only be using the first set of screws. If you proceed to another outlet, you will use a different set of screws for the cable going to the next outlet.
Then loosen the gold screw and connect the hot wire to the gold screw (short pin side). Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

Now we connect the outlet to the box by adjusting and tightening the two connection screws that came with the outlet. When laying wires in the box, make sure the bare ground doesn’t touch any of the hot screws, this will short out and trip the switch when you turn it on.
Attach the outlet cover. We are ready to try it. Flip the switch and you should be good to go.

You know when you have so much junk in your car that each one needs its own power jack? Well, even if you don’t do it, I will. While splitters are available, they have limited power (whatever an outlet can provide). So if you need to use powerful devices like small and mid-sized inverters or things like mini fridges, they’re not going to work very well with the other devices on the splitter. Using just a few cheap car cables and plugs (and some soldering skills, of course), we can make another power connector.
Warning: Modifying some elements may be against the laws in your area. I don’t think this is going to be a legal issue (even in Massachusetts) so you should be fine.

Also note that the cables in your vehicle may not be as easily accessible as mine. I drive a Dodge Neon so all you have to do is reach under the dash and voila! Many wires in fancier vehicles, like Mercedes-Benz or BMWs, can actually prevent you from touching the internal wires. You should have a pretty good understanding of car wiring before trying this Instructable, but I’ll cover the basics.
Important: You are about to replace your vehicle’s wiring. Make sure you know what you’re getting into. Your vehicle probably has extra wires like mine, so it won’t be a big deal, but it probably doesn’t, in which case you’ll have to do a little more work.
Well, off we go. First, get some thick wire (gauge 12 is good). A good cable for this is an old-fashioned two-cord pull cord. I have black and red 14 gauge wire so I used that. You will also need a car socket. I found mine on some GameBoy accessories, which I had to unplug the 20 gauge cable for. I’m also All Electronics Corp. I like that it has good parts at a good price (allelectronics.com). The only thing I could find is one with plugs on either end of the cord (so you can have two!) at www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/CLP-94/20-CORD-W/- CIG-LIGHTER-SOCKETS-BOTH-ENDS/1.html was $5.70 at the time of writing. Depending on what you choose to do, you will also need wire nuts or connector crimps or solder/shrink tubing. Of course, you’ll also need a reliable soldering iron and whatever screws your car requires. Usually Phillips heads are good enough, but Torx are also very popular in vehicles.
You’ll need this step if you didn’t prepare the power plug with the cable, or if the cable gauge is too small. The picture I took is the finished project, sorry.

3. Prepare a new cable. You can choose whatever length of cable you want, so I recommend starting with a longer cable and then you can cut from there.
4. Solder the POSITIVE wire to the CENTER tab. This is very important, because most devices will not work if current flows in the opposite direction.
This is the hardest part of the whole process. Every vehicle is a little different, so the method I’ve described may not work for you. I try to make it as generic as possible. (I think it would be very easy if you could install an amplifier/subwoofer in your car).
1. First start by locating your internal fuse panel. Mine is on the driver’s side dashboard which is immediately visible when the door is opened. You may be on the other side in the same location, under the dash or even in the engine bay. Your owner’s manual will tell you exactly where it is for your particular vehicle, so consult the owner’s manual if you’re not sure. It almost hurts to say.

2. The door covering the panel tells you which fuse is doing what and what rating it has. This is useful for replacing blown fuses. But what you need to do is first look for a fuse that doesn’t seem to fit your vehicle. In my case I had a fuse that said “Moonroof” and I didn’t even have a manual Moonroof so I knew it wasn’t going anywhere.
3. If one is empty and you see the appropriate hole and there’s no fuse there, it’s useless.
