How To Build A Pong Table – An outdoor ping pong table has been on my to-do list for years. We’ve had a cheap, ugly ping pong table on our patio for a long time and it fits perfectly. We can’t move too far off the table, so my guys can’t really play well. Also, we had a comfortable bed in the place where the ping pong table is now, and I really miss the bathroom, so… there goes the ping pong table.
Standard tennis tables are 5′ x 9′. After much thought, I decided to use plywood to make the wooden sides of my table instead.
How To Build A Pong Table
I use a full 4′ x 8′ sheet of plywood for the center, and tear another sheet of plywood into 5 1/2″ strips to go around the outer edge to the exact finished dimensions. I also add a piece of 1″ X 2″ trim to the outer edge to cover the edge of the raw plywood.

I used my circular saw to rip the plywood into 51/2″ pieces. I used 1″ x 6″ pine logs as a jig. I nailed the 1″ x 6″ to the wood and ran my circular saw fence along the edge of the wood to get a perfect cut.

After adding all the edge pieces to get the table top to the right dimensions, I glued 1″ x 6″ pine boards to the bottom of the table tennis table top to make the edges of the table and cover the pocket holes. It strengthens seams, seals pocket holes, makes wood more weather-resistant, and protects the table from warping and warping.

And finally, I glued 1″ x 2″ pine to the edges of the raw plywood. I set up the corners, glued the edges and attached the pine with tack nails.
After the ping pong table was finished I used wood putty to fill all the seams. I then searched the entire tabletop preparing to spray with sealer.
Before staining the table I used Scotch blue masking tape to give the lines the rules. It worked like a charm… I was worried that the stain might seep under the tape, but luckily it didn’t and the lines are very clear and clean.

And finally… I used @totalboat water based varnish to cover the table top. I applied four coats of varnish. I think I will use less. The beauty of water-based varnish is that it dries quickly and you can reapply within an hour.

In fact, they were never really finished. I was so fed up with the wood waste that they were all over the place. I drilled holes in the side of the table and the legs (in the vertical position) so I could close the legs. This makes the table stronger and easier to set up.

This is the fun part!!! It is easier to paint the 2 parts before joining them together. Choose what you want to do, I went with this because it’s easy and you can still see the wood grain and it gives a good result. This step is up to you and I can only offer some suggestions.

Remember to wear a mask properly!! You don’t want to mess up the table at this point. I used the stencil method and spray painted where I started with white and then red separately and finally blue. I cut the text from a blank sticker, but I think it’s better to do this with an old x-ray.
Now the table must be sealed because the water has leaked. Then paint with varnish, I used clear gloss varnish and did three coats but it depends on the wood. I would say to do at least two coats.
Allow it to dry completely and then give the entire table a once-over with a hair iron, checking for any bubbles or unevenness. Do this between all the coats

Just make sure the boards are strong and remember to be gentle when opening the table so the wood doesn’t break.
You can add any handle, I used an old belt that I attached with metal and screws. Just make sure you find the balance point. I had to reassemble it 3 times before I got it right.
Some people add holes for washing cups, but I like to have a bucket of water under the table. You can also put a screw or hook on each side to hang the fabric to dry the ball.
