Earlier this week I shared how I updated my old glider rocker with a new one. It looks awful sitting outside so I want to see if I can make it look like new. Today I’m going to share how I used my old rug as a pattern to make a new rug for my closet.

Below you can see how bad my seat is. This chair sat on the edge of my front porch for years. The carpets are dirty with paint and generally disgusting.
The first step is to carefully remove the old pad. You’ll definitely need to be patient to make sure your fabric stays intact throughout.
Use your seam ripper to carefully remove the seams from any fabric you plan to re-upholster.

Pay attention to how the pieces fit together when removing the stitches to make sewing easier. I took a few pictures with my phone for reference. You may or may not want to sew it exactly the same, but at least you know how the original pieces fit together.
I plan to reupholster the upholstery, cushions and seat cushions. I have now decided not to replace the seat cushions. Maybe I’ll update these at some point, but since the seats have been outside, the pockets are full of dust and leaves.
I decided that the chair was going to stay on our front porch, so I decided to go with a solid fabric. Once everything is removed, use the removed fabric pieces to make new fabric pieces. Attach the old fabric to the new fabric by straight stitching.

Now it’s time to sew. In the first step I mentioned how to record how the parts are sewn? You will sew them back together using the same general method you used to take them apart.

I had to add flaps to the outside of the fabric before sewing the pieces together. These allow the pads to be attached to the slider so that they don’t slip or slip easily.
My original rug had four velcro straps and then two ties. The decorative fabric was too stiff to wire, so I just velcroed all six pull tabs.
I cut the fabric about 3 inches wide for the tie. I cut it in two, right sides together. Then I sew the cut edges on both sides. I open the tap on the right side. Sew the open end inside and topstitch to secure the closure. I then sewed the velcro to the end panel so it wrapped around the cross section of the seat.

For my particular seat cushion, a foam pad was added to the cushion. So first I joined the two right side pieces of fabric together.
Then I turned the fabric so that everything was just right. Place the new foam block in the pillow case. I tucked the edges into the mattress and secured them. Then I sewed the edges of the cushions.
For mattresses, it is sewn to the front of the mattress. I place the fabric first, front side down, and pin the battery to the wrong side of the fabric. I stitched three straight lines through the fabric with batting to keep it from moving.

NOTE: The original pieces were put together like this, so it made it easy for me to figure out how to make my new pillow.
I then joined the top and bottom of the right side of the pillow and sewed the outer edge, leaving the bottom edge open. I turned the fabric right side out again and placed the foam pieces inside the pillow. I crimped the edge and sewed it to the bottom edge.
Handy Tip: It was easier to push the foam pieces further into the pad while sewing. Once I was done sewing, it was easy to put it back on.

This is the easiest part of the project. Depending on how you assembled it, use a screwdriver or a six-point screwdriver to remove the top fabric and wood pieces from the ottoman frame.
Remove the fabric. They are usually stapled, so a flat blade and knife work well to get the staples straight.
Use the old fabric as a template to cut the new fabric for the ottoman. I replaced the foam and reworked it all. Using an electric cutter is the easiest way to cut thick foam.

Place the fabric (side down), then the foam, then the wood. Place the foam and wood in the center of the piece of fabric.
Hand tip: If you’re using a patterned fabric that needs a more even pattern (like stripes or checks), lay the wood base first, then the foam, and turn the fabric right side out. Carefully turn everything over and staple the fabric to the back of the wood.
I like to start tying on the wrong side of the fabric so I can make sure everything is straight and tight. Then I go in the opposite direction. Fold the corners and staple at the end.

I am very happy with how this project turned out. This fabric is beautiful and the centerpiece of our front porch. Since this will be outside, I sprayed each pillow with pillow protector spray to keep it nice and clean.
