In my search for the perfect round dining table, I found some beautiful designs. One of my favorites is this butterfly table (below) by Studio Hank. The thing is, spending €1,860,000 on the table was not part of the budget, as nice as it is. So when Joran and I took a welding course, I used it as design inspiration for our geometric dining table legs.

For a used round table (€ 40, -), steel (€ 72.70), primer and an anthracite color coating (€ 51.55), the total cost of the table reached a relatively modest € 164.25.
Now I understand that learning to weld and do everything yourself is not for everyone. So please, if you enjoy setting a table and can spend money on quality items, go for it. I think it’s a beautiful table.

But personally, I really like making things with my hands. I enjoy the personal quality of handmade items and use the best that is available. I enjoy taking used items and turning them into pre-loved items. And I love learning new skills along the way.
I’m still a bit on the fence about combining the design of the table with the design of the chair, but overall I’m a happy camper. Progress is good.

My wife suggested that we invent and build a functional table with the floor layout in mind. Their small dining room is off the kitchen, with cupboards separating the two. With limited space in their small dining room, I designed a corner bench with storage and a petite dining table with matching legs. A four-legged table in this case will not work because of the corner chair. The legs block the entrance so that someone can slip into the far corner. My first thought was to put one foot in the middle of the table. But after playing around with the design software, I came up with a design that is much better than just one straight leg in the middle. I used regular 4×4 structural lumber from Home Depot, cut it at 45 degrees, and folded it together. The design of the table works well and does not block access to the corner chair.

Take a 1×10 board and cut five boards 48 inches long. The boards on both sides of the table should be cut at 45°, see picture. Make a 45° cut according to the measurements below. Then drill the pocket holes using the Kreg Jig set in the 3/4-inch board. Assemble the top boards using 1 1/4-inch pocket-hole screws and wood glue. Use pipe clamps to hold the boards in place while screwing them in.
When attaching the board to the table, it is important to ensure that there are no gaps between the seams. The side boards should be the perfect length, you don’t want the table to be too short or too long. Before cutting these tiles, each side must be measured separately. The side of the 2×4 should be cut to a 22.5° cut using a miter saw. Short 2x4s have pocket holes for 1 1/4-inch screws, but long boards do not have pocket holes. Attach these boards with pocket hole screws and wood glue. Fasten the side boards to the table top to prevent movement before mounting.

To build the legs, take a 4×4 and cut two boards 40 3/4 inches long, at 45° on each side. Cut a 1 3/4 inch deep by 3 1/2 inch wide slot in the center with a miter saw or jig. Use a wooden mallet to clear the notch from the high spots.
Apply wood glue to the cut and slide the two legs together to form a cross leg. Insert two 2 1/2-inch wood screws directly into the center of the hole to connect the legs together.
To attach the remaining legs, take a 4×4 board and cut four pieces 20 3/8 inches long at a 45 degree angle as shown in the picture. See the cut list for exact measurements. Drill two pocket holes with a 2 1/2-inch screw on each side of the leg.

Draw a horizontal line in the center of the cross. Place your legs crossed on a flat surface, feet flat on the floor. Next, place the bottom 4×4 leg on the horizontal line and secure it with a 2 1/2-inch pocket hole screw and wood glue. Once the bottom legs are attached, do the same with the top 4×4 legs.
Take a 2×4 and cut three pieces 46 inches long. Return the table top to the floor. Attach one of the 2×4s to the center board with 2-inch wood screws. The remaining two support boards should be installed with the legs resting on them and also secured with 2-inch wood screws.
If you prefer to cover the pocket holes, take 3/8 inch dowels and cut 16 pieces to 2 inches. Dip the dowel in wood glue and tap the pocket hole with a hammer. Cut the cover with a dovetail, leaving you with a flat surface. Using a random orbital sander, sand the area to make it smooth. Draw and color. You’re all set with this DIY dining table.
