Set of 4 lovely DKX-2 wire bikini shell chairs on X base with hot pink Naugahyde bikini covers designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller. It is in excellent vintage restored condition. The chairs had some factory weld repairs and one chair had a weld repair. Brand new black paint. Bikini cover cleaned. There may be small scratches on the bikini cover. Look at the photo. Around the 1960s.

She was wearing that tiny wennie, not that hot pink bikini that was too yellow. hi! understood. I am excited. But how could you not pick up this absolutely stunning set of four wire chairs in hot pink? Yes, I said hot pink, bikini cover up. They sit on a solid X base and we ordered new boot feet. When Eames designed the Wireshell Side Chair for Herman Miller in the 1950s, he was inspired by trays, dress shapes and baskets. Versatility was one of the eames design mandates, so this chair could be configured in many different ways. It can be bought on various surfaces and without a cover, as a full cover or as a half cover with this nickname called a bikini. These 4 sets are circa 1960's.
Charles Eames was born in 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California in 1912. They met at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and married in 1941. Together they moved to California to continue their design work. They started together in Cranbrook. Acquired by the government during World War II to manufacture cast plywood insoles and stretchers, the commission began a career in producing iconic mid-century modern furniture that is still fresh and popular today. Herman Miller began in Zeeland, Michigan in 1905 with the Star Furniture Co., a manufacturer of quality furniture. In 1919, it became the Michigan Star Furniture Co, and in 1923, longtime employee Dirk Jan De Pree and his craftsmen bought 51% of the company's stock and renamed it the Herman Miller Furniture Company. It remained that way until it became Herman Miller, Inc. in the 1960s. Until the 1930s they only produced traditional wooden furniture, but the Great Depression necessitated a change and they hired the modernist Gilbert Rohde to lead the company in a new and successful direction. In 1944, when Rodet died, his seat was replaced by another famous George Nelson. Working with the likes of Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Girard and Robert Propst, as well as Charles and Ray Eames, Nelson made Herman Miller one of the biggest names in furniture and design.
