While in the trenches of infertility, they embarked on what would become their biggest DIY project yet, recruiting 3 beautiful girls to do it. <3 I've had my papasana chair frame for over a year now and I don't have a cushion because I didn't have the heart to pay $80 for a new one. After my pets scratched and peed on my old pillow, I looked for sale or used pillows that I could work with, with no luck. Then I decided to reuse old pillows from around the house and make my own (since stuffing is also more expensive than you think and reuse).
To start this project, I took my grandmother’s sewing machine to figure out how to use it. Me and my mom brain (especially my mom) figured out how to get the yarn going! After being able to use the machine, I was ready to tackle the project that day!

I bought a fabric with a cute fuzzy fern design for about $10 that I knew my cat wouldn’t scratch this time since it’s not woven. I laid out the fabric and measured a 52″ diameter circle (for a 48″ chair). I did this by attaching a shoe to a knitting needle at one end and a Sharpie at the other, leaving a 26 inch gap. My mother held the needle while I drew the cross.
Then I cut out the circle and laid it flat. At first I wanted to try putting a pillow in my hand to make sure it was enough. I cut the stuffing out of 4 pillows and separated the folds so I could spread it out and put it all over. It seemed to stretch well, so I moved on to cutting the fabric for the other side of the pillow.
With the cut cross facing down and the other fabric facing up, I used pins to pin the cross flat to the top. I did this with an orientation so that the last outer side of the fabric is also facing in, so I can pin it for sewing and then the seams will be on the inside. After pinning, I followed the edge of the second and cut out the bottom circle.

Now two circles with my pin, time to sew. I marked two points on the circle about 2 feet apart that are my start and end points. I had to have enough room to get it inside, so the soft part was on the outside, and then I could fill it with stuffing. After a few mishaps, like the needle falling out and the fabric coming off the edge a time or two, I finished sewing with the machine.
Then I scooped out the soft interior and filled in all the filling I had prepared. I was fine with 4 pillows, but I had an extra $4 pillow from Target (cheaper than buying my own stuffing) so I cut it up and stuffed it. I tried it and it definitely does the job, but we also had some old foam so I cut it up and stuffed it inside. At this point, the pillow was very soft, but very comfortable.
I then debated how to close the last two legs, either sewing it or sewing the buttons and holes, but my dad pulled out the zipper he had saved years ago (those can be tougher) and I sewed by hand. along the zipper opening. That way, if I need to wash it, I can open it up and open it up.
