One of the easiest DIY upholstery projects is reupholstering dining chair seats. I have never done a quilting project before and it was so easy! It will give your chair a whole new look in minutes. So, even if you are new to DIY, you can do it too!

As we move forward with the dining room remodel, it's time to replace my 80 year old dining room chair covers!

The pretty raisin colored needlepoint chair covers just didn't fit the blue/green vibe I was going for. But since they were made many years ago by someone in my family, I don't want to replace them.

So, my original plan was to make pleated covers for them with this beautiful blue geometric fabric. I don't have a link to the fabric, but I have shared the information under “Supplies”.

I spoke with the seamstress I hired to make the slipcover, and she encouraged me to change the needlepoint fabric for three reasons:

And my seamstress encouraged me to restore the seat cushions. Wow!! More money saved and I tried a new DIY project I've never tried before!

So, I set out to find out how to restore a chair cushion. I'm here to tell you that with the right tools and supplies, it's really easy!

The first chair cushion took me an hour to restore because I figured out how to do it. But once I got the hang of it, now I need 20 minutes per chair, tops.

Dining Chair Covers

You should choose a fabric that is heavy duty enough to withstand wear and tear, and that won't show stains too badly. Be sure to choose an upholstery fabric made for upholstery that doesn't tear easily.

A great way to find cheap fabric is to look for shower curtains, tablecloths or even window curtains.

How To Make No Sew Chair Back Covers

Feel free to reuse any of the foam or batting from the chair if it's still in good condition! I'm 80 years old so I replaced it.

The seat is usually attached to the chair with screws under the seat. So, turn it on and relax!

Usually the old upholstery is attached under the seat with staples. So, take out the staple with a staple removal tool or flat head screwdriver and pliers.

Fortunately my chair is quite old, so the tacks were used. And it's easy to loosen them with a screwdriver.

I didn't need to do this step because the wood on the seats was good. But if your seat is broken or cracked beyond repair, you'll need to replace it.

Take a 1/2″ plywood board and use the old seat as a template to make a new one with a jigsaw.

If you want to replace the old foam, add new foam to your seat, place the foam on the seat and trace around it with a marker. Cut to size.

It's okay if you have to sew several pieces together because they will all be covered with batting and look like one solid piece when you're done.

Please use glue to hold these layers until you have fixed everything!

You want the bat to wrap under the seat, so make it 3 inches wider than the seat on each side.

After you've cut out the batting, trim the corners so there isn't too much material to pile up.

If you are using patterned fabric, you need to remember the direction of the pattern and the center of the pattern before cutting it.

How To Reupholster Dining Chair Covers

A general rule of thumb is 4+ inches of extra fabric on each side of the seat to wrap over the foam and batting and under the seat.

Use an old seat fabric as a handy guide. I cut mine a little larger to center my pattern on the seat. Then I go back and cut as needed.

Find the center of the seat and mark it on the foam. Align your fabric to the location and if your fabric has a pattern, make sure it is centered.

Turn everything back and pull the fabric along the front edge. Then put a main piece under the seat through the fabric.

Turn the seat in each direction and place a core in the center of each side, pulling gently as you go. If the fabric is kept soft, it will look messy on top.

Once you've stapled all four sides, turn the seat over and make sure it's in place before continuing.

If it looks good, turn it over and keep stapling each side as you go. If not, remove the staples and try again.

When you reach the corner, keep the shoulders as close to the corner as possible without going to the side.

This is the scariest part, but it's not that hard. You can wrap a gift beautifully, you can do it!

Take the two side pieces and fold each side to make two folds at the corners. I made a video to show you how I do it. But practice on the back of the chair before trying the front corners, because they cover the back of the chair.

Finally, once everything is stabilized, it's time to reattach the seat to the chair and you're done! Yes!

This will vary depending on how big your seat cover is. The easiest thing is to remove the original fabric covers and see how much has been used before. Then multiply by the number of seats.

But in general, you need 4″ more on each side than the actual size of the seat cover. Allow a yard or yard and a half for extra allowance.

So, if your chair is 18″ wide, you will need a square of fabric at least 22″ wide and long to wrap around the cushion and secure under the seat of the chair.

But if you want to do something else with the old fabric or replace the seat, foam and/or bat, you'll need to remove the old fabric first. Pre-wash the fabric and iron if necessary. Draw the fabric over the chair and use sharp scissors to cut a piece on both sides of the chair and the chair. Be sure to leave a few inches of overhang when cutting these pieces, so there is plenty of fabric to work with.
