How To Build A Table Tennis Table
NOTE: This is not a regulatory table! This table measures 4′ x 8′ compared to the adjustment table which measures 5′ x 9′. Almost the same height.
Mini Kids Ping Pong Table Tennis
Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a board. You can take it home and cut it yourself, or they will cut it for you at the store. Cut in half widthwise so you have 2 to 4'x4′ panels.
MDF works best – gives you a surface that won't warp and gives you the best swelling.
Place the saw in the configuration shown in the picture. The center horse of the saw should be perpendicular to the center of the table saw. The horse of the end saw should be perpendicular to the middle horse.

Place the panel on the sawhorse. The net is a retractable net. Stretch and attach it to the table so that the mesh lines up with the seam where the two panels meet.
If you're worried about splitting the panel, don't be. Unless I'm going to bend over or bump into the table, the panels are heavy enough to stay in place.
If desired, use several spacer plates and attach them to the other end of the bottom panel where the mesh will be attached. Then attach it to the other panel with thumbscrews. Remember to drill pilot holes first! Thumb screws allow you to install and remove panels by hand.
Building Your Own Table Tennis Or Ping Pong Table
If you don't want to leave the table or want to play alone, remove the table and place only half of the table against the wall. Install only two parts. An outdoor ping-pong table has been on my to-do list for years. We've had an ugly cheap ping pong table in our backyard for a long time and it barely fits. We can't go too far off the table, so my guys can't play well. We also have a nice rocking chair with a ping pong table, and I really miss a rocking bed, so … out comes the ping pong table.
Ping pong tables are a standard size of 5'x9′. After much consideration, I decided to use plywood to make my desk a yardstick.
I used a solid piece of 4″ x 8″ plywood for the center and tore another piece of plywood into a 5 1/2″ strip to round the outer edge to the correct dimensions. I also added a 1″ X 2″ piece to the outer edges to seal the edges of the raw plywood.

I used my circular saw to rip the plywood into 51/2″ strips. I used 1″ x 6″ pine for the stand. I attached the 1″ x 6″ plywood and ran my circular saw fence along the edge of the wood to get a perfect straight cut.

After all the side pieces were glued to get the table top to the right dimensions, I attached a 1″ x 6″ pine board to the bottom of the ping pong table top to raise the seam and cover the pocket hole. This makes the joint stronger, seals the pocket holes, makes the wood less exposed to the elements, and prevents the table from warping and jointing.

And finally, I glued 1″ x 2″ pine to the edges of the raw plywood. I beveled the corners, trimmed the ends and attached the pine with dowels.
When the ping-pong table was finished, I filled all the layers with wood filler. Then I sanded the entire table in preparation for the stain and sealant.
Before staining the table, I used blue Scotch tape to remove the cut lines. It worked like a charm… I was worried that the stain might seep under the tape, but surprisingly it didn't and the lines were sharp and clean.

And finally… I used @totalboat brand water based varnish to seal the table. I used 4 coats of varnish. I think I'll apply for more. The beauty of water-based varnishes is that they dry quickly and you can reapply within an hour.
The list has some interesting choices: #8 is made from an upside down car; #6 from recycled board; #7 is a $40 pick; and always at the bottom of the post there was also a floating ping pong table for the pool!
