How To Make A Cutting Table For Sewing – Tilly's post last week on her McGyverd workstation reminded me of research I did a few months ago on DIY operating tables. Of course, I have a soft spot for my own bleached, threaded baby (seriously, I could walk out of this every morning if I wasn't worried about lip splinters), but there are plenty of options.
Most of us start sewing with what is available. I'm sure most of you are familiar with crawling on the floor or crawling across the dining table with scissors. The problem is our lack of cooperation. I have damn low back issues, and last year it became clear that if I didn't make a cutting table at a comfortable height, I would be designing patterns for people with constant back pain (imagine a big bag. You're lying in the fetal position while occasionally swaying in a semi-active yoga position).
How To Make A Cutting Table For Sewing
I think crafting is more fun when you're not hurting yourself, so I collected all the DIY guides I could find for a crafting/cutting/sewing table. These difficulties range from “saw plywood” to “bribing a friend or relative working in wood with the right to name the first child.” Either way, having a dedicated workspace can greatly improve your life (and past). Some of these DIYs are designed for regular tables or desks, so keep in mind that you may need to adjust the height. The standard counter height is 36 inches (or 0.9 meters), which I recommend unless you are very short or tall. If you're comfortable working on a standard kitchen countertop, the 36″ is your best bet.

If space is an issue for you, consider folding or tilting tables. All things that are to be attached to the wall must of course be properly anchored, so a stud locator will come in handy.
Trestle tables are great because you can easily make them yourself after visiting Home Depot or Ikea. If there is not enough space, they can be dismantled if necessary.

I love hacking things from Ikea to make something cool (I made a fauxdenza I'll share with you soon). Add creative cabinets, bookshelves and kitchen islands to their list and you can easily add a workstation and casters and you're on your way.

Before we bought a house, I always sewed at the kitchen table. We had no formal dining room. So this multi-purpose room (sewing, breakfast/lunch/dinner, homework, crafts) was a bit crowded at times.

We started by assembling the shelves according to IKEA instructions. (My husband has been an IKEA furniture builder for the past few months.)
After sanding the edges of the pressed board, we laid it on top and screwed it into place.
There is a centimeter gap between the shelves that goes down to their backs. This is one of the reasons why we need an extra board.

I didn't want a dark stain and I like the natural look. But I know I have a cup of coffee and I have a stain with it!
The clear wood coat didn't work for me as I didn't want the red beech to be visible. So we need a waterproof coating.
We choose a birch coating to remove the red color of the beech wood. One coat is enough. Leave it to dry for a few days. Sand with fine sandpaper.

Oh, my husband only painted the top and sides at my request. Unless your countertop is very flat, you'll want to stain the curved part like a boat. When you screw in the bottom of the board, it goes horizontally.
Then place the worktop on the floor right side up and upside down. We centered the base, drilled holes for wood screws. Then screw the L-bracket to the three adjacent sides of the worktop.
We inverted the base and moved it to the other end of the countertop. The top was then screwed to the end piece and then to the base. Do you want to take your sewing or craft workshop to a new level? If you sew a lot, there is nothing in the world more desirable than a sturdy table that works without bending down. I have back problems because I put off yoga sitting at my desk and my dining table is slowly killing me and my body. A comfortable working height for most people is 36 inches (which is the standard kitchen counter height), so we aimed for that, although shorter or taller people may want to adjust the height accordingly. Remember that the stools are designed to be used on 36″ and 42″ worktops, so the seat will be uncomfortable if you deviate too much from these dimensions.

The great thing about this project is that it requires few tools. Most of the cuts are made at your hardware store, making it easy to get things home. For this tutorial, you will get a table that is 3 feet wide by 6 feet long. If you want smaller, you need to adjust the measurements.
In total, consumables, including accessories, cost around $200. I thought it made sense, especially after considering some custom work (OUCH!). It took me a day and a half to complete the project, which was a worthwhile investment that saved my tired back muscles.
And that's all people! It's been a few days of work, but I can't begin to tell you how much this cutting table has changed my sewing practice. I am no longer afraid of cutting, and I enjoy stretching the silk and watching it glide across my beautifully polished table.
