We had seen similar ideas but felt we could improve the design to create a stronger and more durable product that could withstand our brutal weather cycles.

For this reason, we do not recommend pre-cutting the tree to length. We think it's best to cut costs when you're working on the plans, as this will give you the freedom to make small adjustments as needed, ensuring a durable table.

As you build, sand each part of the patio table, smoothing out all edges, corners, and edges. It will be much easier if you sand the individual parts before assembling the table.

Most sanding can be done with an orbital sander equipped with 120 grit sandpaper. Rough areas may require 80 grit sandpaper.

After sanding each piece, we recommend painting it. It is much easier to stain the parts than after assembling the entire patio table.

Staining between assembly intervals (as specified on the woodworking plans) helps ensure the stain does its job of protecting and waterproofing the wood, so your table will withstand the elements.

Making the legs using 4×4 posts, a table saw, and wood anchors is easy. Full details are covered in woodworking plans, but we've included an overview here because it's a popular tip for saving money on table legs.

Create the leg, then attach it to the table with diagonal brace and screws. This system makes it very easy to remove the legs for storage or transport.

Turn the table saw blade to 45 degrees to create a flat surface. Mark with a pencil so you know how far to cut. Set the table saw fence to 2 3/4″.

On the new flat surface, measure and mark the locations of the wood anchors. (These should match the support brackets made in the next step.) Using a 7/16″ drill bit, drill holes about 1 1/2″ deep.

To attach the legs, make diagonal braces that attach to the column, cut from 2×4s with 45-degree angles at each end.

In the center of the diagonal section, mark the same places where the wood will be attached to the legs and drill holes with a 1/2-inch drill bit. Attach the bracket to the post with cap screws, then attach the legs to the diagonal bracket with screws and washers.

Since we are using Douglas fir, a soft wood, we chose to use a wood conditioner to make our coat smoother.

About 15 minutes after applying the wood conditioner, I applied a coat of base oil-based interior wood stain with a foam brush.

“I used pressure-treated pine. This made the table heavy, but hopefully it will be good for a long time. Because of the weight of the table, I added heavy-duty locking wheels to the bottom. This allows it to move without reaching the neighbors.
