Chances are you have all the pieces on hand to make something amazing and that's the story with this simple sailing table. I'm sharing how to build this DIY boat style table perfect for a large or small space.

Below are my plans for building this table, as well as some real-life construction tips. You can see that I chose to bend the legs just a little on the inside corner. This is a personal preference as I don't want a “cankle” look for this table. I'm so glad I added this taper. With the open space under the table, the space is fluid and welcoming.

Since I'm using wild wood, I actually do it first. I need the above parameters to specify the prefix. If you are aiming for a specific top size, I highly recommend building the top first and then the base.

To make the legs look sharp, I recorded the details here in Instagram highlights. You should make a cone shape template (like the one I created here) and use Tamar in the 3×3 tutorial here.

I used an 8 gauge screw to attach the top to the base. Mark where you need fasteners, then use a wood drill to create the interior area. Glue one side of the knot to the apron, and once the table top is in place, glue the other side to the bottom of the table.

We will build this table from top to bottom. Start with the top of the table frame. It can be attached with a pocket pin or a straight pin. I recommend two screws in each area to make sure everything is secure.

Now place the 17-inch 2x2s on top of the frame, leaving space in each corner to accommodate the 17.5-inch 2×2 legs.

Now that the table top frame is complete, attach the 17.5 inch legs to the side table frame.

I like to push the screw almost into the board before attaching it to the table. Now make it a little easier. Also, I recommend 2 screws to attach the legs for stability.

Round Dining Table Build Plans

The base frame of the table is now complete. Now assemble the table top for the side table. Lay out a board equal to 17 inches 1 × 3. You can do this visually or use the board as a placeholder.

Now use 2-16.5″ boards and 17″ boards with 1-1/4″ screws. Attach the table to the table frame with 1 corner screws.

To give the table top an added look, you can place a 1/4-in. thick board under the top of the table while putting a stick in the corner.

Once you have nailed it in place, make a hinged top under the table using a 1/4-inch-thick board.

Finally, mark the center of the two supporting legs and place the remaining 17 inches of 2 × 2 in the middle of this board. I recommend two packs on each side.

Fill the screw holes with wood putty, sand and paint or stain to match your patio or outdoor shed.
