How To Make Epoxy Coffee Table – As a carpenter, I have an ever-growing list of projects I want to build at some point in my career… and at the top of that list is a resin river table. Although resin river tables are made frequently, it struck me that many of these projects are made with industrial equipment in large workshops. So I decided to take on the challenge of creating one using handheld power tools and accessories that can be found at my local hardware store. Furthermore, to help make this a reality, I teamed up with my awesome friends at Bernzomatic!
The thing is, you don’t need a fully equipped, industrial-sized workshop to make good stuff. Actually, I originally intended to create this project using three power tools (a circular saw, drill and a sander), but I made a mistake while casting and had to use a power hand planer as well. But if you can keep the resin from seeping under the panels, you can totally get away with three power tools for this project!

I also added black pigment to make the river look like tar. You can choose the pigment you want!

14. I then made sure my panels were level, then poured deep poured epoxy into the flow holes and any cracks that needed filling. Be sure to follow the instructions on the resin container to determine how deep you can pour at a time. I was a bit ambitious and my resin contracted during the curing so be careful!
15. After pouring the resin, I used a Bernzomatic B4500 Large Surface Shrink Burner to remove as many bubbles from the resin as possible. This is important because I don’t want the resin to be hard with bubbles.
Then I watched the cast and sometimes I had to use a Burnzomatic ST2200 hobby and home detail torch to remove any random bubbles while it cured.

16. Because my resin had shrunk a bit, a day later I had to go back to the project and repeat steps 13-15 until I was happy with the depth of the casting.
17. After letting the resin cure according to the label of the product I was using, I removed the mold from the countertops.
18. At this point I realized there was a large leak on the underside of the panel, so I used a power hand planer to remove most of the resin.

19. I then used a sander to smooth the rest of the table. I started with 120 grit sandpaper and worked up to 400 grit before finishing the table.
I still can’t believe I made this table with tools I found at my local hardware store! It looks like it came from a reputable wood shop!

All you need to do to get started is to sketch a design idea and follow the steps below. Keep in mind that starting your project should be relatively simple – especially if you’re a beginner.

Decide what color you want your table to be, this will help you choose the right acrylic for your mix. For best results it is helpful to create several test discs to use with the wood. Generally, about 4 ounces of acrylic to one drop of resin is a good mix. You can always add more drops by continuing to pour.

When you’re done, create a pen for your table. This forms the shape of the finished product. Remove any backing from the acrylic sheets and use staples to hold the acrylic pieces together in the pentagonal box. You can level the floor on purchased pieces of wood.
Make sure the acrylic is even so you don’t end up with a wobbly table. Once you’ve got the shape you want, cut the wood to fit and make sure you’ve decided what kind of look you want. You can put resin on the inside, on both sides of the wood piece, or on one side of the wood.
When everything is set up correctly, the next step is water. Make sure you measure the resin mixture correctly and mix it as thoroughly as possible. If you don’t mix properly, your layers won’t cure properly. Once the resin is set up, you can add your color. Remember that a bit goes a long way. If you add too much, you won’t be able to see through the resin and enjoy the wood effect inside.

If you’re worried about the epoxy on the underside of the acrylic piece, you can always tape the acrylic down first – but it’s not necessary. While pouring, mix the epoxy thoroughly and apply in 1/8 coats to ensure consistency. After each pour, go in with a hand-held blowtorch and heat up any areas that might contain air bubbles. Do not leave the heat in one place for too long as it can cause burns.
Once done, cover the table completely and wait about 48 hours for it to harden. Remember to leave it as long as possible between coats. This will take some time, but it will ensure proper treatment of the layers.
Ideally, it is best to leave the resin clean during the final pour, as this will help preserve the color and style of the wood. Once the final layer is set, you need to remove it from the acrylic mold, which you can do with a hammer and chisel. The sides should separate easily on their own.

If you have a perfect cast and no bumps because you don’t like sticky acrylic, you still need to sand your new creation. The good news is that you can do this with a relatively simple orbital sander. Make sure you have 60 grit or sandpaper, 100, 120, 150, 220 and various other sizes. The smallest grit removes the material from the top of the table, which is necessary to eliminate defects.
If you are looking for the best table to sell online, you need a more hardcore grinder. However, if you use the table yourself, you should go with an orbital sander. Just make sure you don’t forget to wear protective clothing, whatever you do. Safety glasses and a respirator should always be worn during this part of the procedure. When you’re done sanding, you’ll probably be covered in dust.
If you are concerned about the extensive cleaning process, you can keep things simple by wearing long sleeves. Remember that sanding is not the best part of making a table and requires a lot of patience. However, if you stick with it, you should have a great end product.

A good way to make sure your sanding goes as smoothly as possible is to take some time to touch the resin before you start lifting. If you see a soft or sticky spot, stick the tape aside and pour a thin layer of resin over the spot. This will help cover the sticky area. If you accidentally drag one of these spots instead, you’ll need to manually heat the spot and cut the dusty resin from the layer. Acetone can be a good way to remove any sticky residue until it reaches a firm layer on the countertop, or you can try nail polish remover instead.
Once you’re done digging and debugging, you can sand the entire table until everything fits together. Some areas need a lighter touch than others, and it’s important to be careful when doing this. Problem areas can be sealed with an additional layer of resin at any time.
To complete the table, clean the surface with a vacuum cleaner and duster cloth, then use a wood conditioner and stain to finish the wood. When everything is dry, you can go through the table again with polyacrylic base. Ideally, you want a spray finish as this will help create a more balanced look on the table.
