We are lucky that our backyard is on a lake surrounded by trees and even luckier that we have a story house with a porch that overlooks the pond.

However, we only have a round metal front porch table that the family has used for years and redid a few years ago.

When summer starts, we want to be able to sit on the porch and enjoy the weather and the view, so we decided to build a modern outdoor bench that fits our space and has enough room for our whole family!

Building a modern outdoor bench can seem overwhelming, but it's not a bad thing, especially if you have an instructor like us!

We designed a modern outdoor sofa to suit our needs in our space, but it's perfect for those who use traditional outdoor furniture cushions.

Here are the tools and materials you'll need to create an exterior profile. You can find the full list of materials and cutting list in our woodworking plan PDF below!

The best wood for outdoor furniture is spruce or cedar. The wood is naturally resistant to weather rot and insects, meaning it will last longer outdoors.

You can use any wood and seal it with exterior sealant, but it's best to use natural materials that hold up well.

For this project we used cypress board, which is actually the cheapest wood you can buy at the hardware store today, then sealed it with a clear exterior sealer. So it is more protected and will last longer.

The entire bench is constructed of 3/4 inch thick cypress planks, but we wanted to make sure it was stable and sturdy enough for several adults to sit on it at any given time. Most of the outdoor sofa plans you see use 2x4s for construction, so we multiplied them with thick double legs and braces, gluing and bolting them together.

We also decided to use an angled leg design to give the sofa a bit of fun rather than just being too fitted and plain. With each section of the bent leg collaged and attached, we began assembling the four sets of legs together.

Each set of legs is four pieces with craigs pocket holes drilled into them. We used a 1 1/2″ hole and 2 1/2″ long kreg screws to hold each piece together. Combined with wood glue, each set of legs is very strong and durable.

We designed this sofa to be a corner sofa with the same dimensions on both sides. For this you need two pillows of each length and one corner pillow.

To do the work, we need to build the chair and the chair separately, and then put them together.

We start with a short chair, attach the legs together in two pieces in the front and back, then add a shelf in the middle.

We also took this time to install the rear seat, repeating the same sliding design for the double thickness backrest screw.

We don't want to attach it yet because we're not sure if we can fit the couch through the mesh patio door with it closed at the back. It turns out that there will be no problem.

As mentioned, we added the chair back in place on the porch because we were afraid it would fit in the door. If you install this on your patio or patio, you can add panels at any time.

Make sure you use wood glue and screw the pocket holes, as everything will be resting on the mattress and you don't want an accident.

After everything is assembled, we connect the chair with four wooden slats between the back of the sofa and the short chair.

This connector looks exactly like the back of the sofa and makes it look like one continuous piece.

Finally, we added a headboard to each sofa and joined them at a 45 degree angle to make the sofa look complete!

Finally we added some throw pillows from Home Depot and we are ready to relax!

The couch is very comfortable and great for enjoying the view. When we have people over, we can now invite them to sit outside with us and talk.
