Materials:- Pressure treated wood (1 x 6 sec (for seat), 4 x 4 sec (for legs), 2 x 6 sec (for frame))

-2.5″ external screws (get a big box, we have to get more because I have a small box)

Step 1: I used a standard seat size (18″ deep, 18″ high, 18″ back). After looking at my sketches (lots of paper lying around and explaining my handwriting) I decided to cut all the frame sections first (start with the back/longest part and go from there.)

Step 2: Once the mount is assembled, we turn it over. Then I cut out all the legs, put them in place, and put them on. The knives I used had extra meat so I put two of each. Since we were building on grass, I had to put a piece of wood under each section I was building to keep it level.

Steps 3-5: We turn the bench over and cut off all back support. I started cutting them at a 20˚ angle, anticipating that I would have to hit them several ways, but 20˚ was enough. I used tension rods to attach to the backrest, then I thought we'd start laying out and cutting the seat parts.

So I opened up all the back parts and then we moved on to the seat parts. With that done, I think the best way to achieve this (in the future) is to start with longer smooth and centered sections. Once you have this, sort out the rest. We complete these pieces by placing, arranging, marking, cutting and repeating.

After all the parts were cut, we glued the back parts together and then put all the seat parts on (Of course, you can go faster and better and assemble the seat slats first.)

Another last minute tweak: I cut the backrest at a 20° angle up and thought I'd put a little edge on top. Laura wanted a more streamlined and clean look, so I trimmed the back of each one, leaving an inch on top.

It looks great, but you can skip this step and curl 2 x 6s (measure and cut to length) over the top for curved edges or to hold drinks.

To match the corners of the back support, we made some adjustments (feeling a theme here?). We start with the top piece: Laura holds a piece on one side, I take one on the other, and mark where they meet. I cut the ends at 20˚ just because the bracket was cut at 20˚, and it worked!

After we put the first row in, we discussed how to place the second row whether to have it sit or be centered. Central standings won and it looks great. It always helps to support projects like this so you can exchange ideas with each other, this support is invaluable.
