How To Wire Up A Wall Socket

How To Wire Up A Wall Socket – For the past 7 weeks I have been helping my father on the turkey farm. They are building 2 new turkey cages and are pressed for time, desperate times to call desperately to measure 🙂 I went to help people install all the systems in the warehouse. The system includes many electrical cables, supply lines, water lines and sprinklers, natural gas lines and heaters, fans, motors, etc. A lot of work!

While I was hooking up the outlet, I thought I’d take a few pictures for guidance. The image is for an industrial environment, but the same technique applies to home use as well. There aren’t enough sockets, right! Sometimes you need to add one here and there in your house/garage.

How To Wire Up A Wall Socket

To plug in a 110v / 120v outlet you need 3 wires, green or bare copper is ground, white is neutral, and usually black or red is hot (live) wire (in this case purple is hot. wire). At home you will often use Romex cables, which can be purchased at hardware stores. Usually you will get 14/2 which means the hot/neutral wire diameter is 14 awg and includes the bare ground. This type of thread is strong. The wire used on this farm is 14 awg stranded, meaning the wire is in a small wire wrap. It is more suitable for use in industrial environments such as farms.

Make sure you turn off the power at the breaker panel in the area you are using. Surprise shock is never fun 🙂

Using an electrical stripper, at the 14 awg mark, strip the insulation from the wire about 1/2 inch from the end. This will expose the bare copper wire.

If you are using a stranded wire, it is easiest to install a crimped connector on the bare wire. Slide the connector over the exposed wire and use the crimp slot and nail the connector to the wire. Pull the connector gently to check that it is connected properly. Repeat for each string.

Loosen the green ground screw and attach the green hood to the green screw. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

Ungrounded Outlets And The Gfci Solution

Note: If using solid copper wire, make a small loop in the wire and wrap it in thread and tighten the screw.

Loosen the top silver screw, connect the neutral wire to one of the silver screws. In a standard 110/120 volt plug, the neutral wire connects to the long opening. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

If this plug is the last plug in the cable, you will only use the first set of screws. If you continue to another outlet, you will use a different set of screws for the cable leading to the next outlet.

Then loosen the gold screw and connect the hot wire to the gold screw (short point side). Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.

Adding An Electrical Outlet In The Middle Of A Run

Now we will connect the outlet to the box by aligning and screwing in the two fixing screws that come with the outlet. When putting the cable into the box, make sure that the bare ground does not touch any of the hot screws, this will short out the power and flip the switch when you turn it on.

Install the outlet cover. We are willing to try. Flip the switch and you should be good to go.

In general, the socket will be connected in the same way as the lamp. Note: Some text links below lead to corresponding products on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from eligible purchases.

Alternatively, you can get a split outlet where one half of the outlet is activated and the other half is active all the time. Below are two wiring diagrams with switches showing split socket wiring.

How Much Does A Gfci Outlet Cost To Install?

A wiring diagram of the switch outlet shows the power from the switch panel to the circuit breaker outlet where the two-wire cable goes to the switch and the two-wire cable feeds more power to another outlet that is always on.

The wiring diagram above shows how switch sockets are often connected. Although Section 404.2(C) of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) requires that wall switches that operate lamps also have an accessible neutral conductor, switches that operate receptacles are exempt from this requirement.

A neutral conductor is required for lights if a standard wall switch is converted to a smart home device or other type of control such as a timer.

I think it’s worth including a neutral switch for the wall switch that controls the outlet anyway because a regular wall switch can still be turned into a smart home device that usually needs a neutral wire to work.

Signs You May Have A Problem With Your Electrical Wiring

It is common practice among the uninitiated to use the equipment grounding conductor as the neutral if there is no neutral. This is an unsafe practice and can be a shock hazard.

When using the white wire as a cable or LINE, re-mark the white wire with a different color. However, in my experience when working with old houses, the white wire hardly changes color when used as a LINE. So it is not strange that the white wire in the junction box is the LINE and not the neutral conductor. Non-contact voltage detectors are good for checking hot wires

Any outlet that children have access to, including the outlet on the kitchen table, should be secured so that they cannot be opened. This prevents them from being inserted into the socket as children do. Section 406.12 defines this code requirement.

How To Wire An Outlet: Gfci Installation

The diagram below shows the power coming from the switchboard. The same wiring diagram can be used if instead the power comes from another socket and is connected to one of the sockets shown on the back.

In the wiring diagram above the hot and neutral connections, enter a single pole junction box. From there, a 3-conductor cable is inserted into the outlet when the outlet is turned on. A two-conductor cable runs from the plugged-in outlet to the live outlet at all times. The two-conductor cable runs from the junction box to another double socket which is also on all the time.

Below are two switch socket wiring diagrams showing how split or half switch sockets can be connected. The first shows the method with the neutral conductor in the junction box. The image below shows how this is usually done.

A split socket is a standard two-sided socket with a tab cut to separate the top and bottom. In the picture below, only the tab on the LINE side of the outlet is cut because the top and bottom use the same neutral.
