It’s the third Tuesday of the month and time for the October Pinterest Challenge! My inspiration for this wreath was the 2011 plastic wreath tutorial. The original pin used strips of plastic fabric cut into 8″ x 2 1/2″ strips that were tied to a wire wreath. Super simple, but a little boring.

For my Halloween plastic canvas wreath, I decided to cut out huge strips using the natural folds of the canvas. Note: strips can be cut to a smaller width with the same result.

Tie a strip of fabric to the wire form. It can be tied to the inside or outside of the thread.

Pull about 2 1/2 inches of fabric between each thread ring to make “bunny ears”. Continue making “bunny ears” until you reach the outer ring. Once you reach the outer ring, wrap the plastic around the outer wire once or tie a knot. Continue making the “bunny ears” and move towards the inside of the crown. Once you get to the end of the fabric strip, tie a knot on the wire shape and continue the process until the wreath shape is covered. Each section will have about 2 1/2 strips and should be enough to hold the loops and complete the wreath.

Fluff the strips by opening the strips. Cut any excess ends to the same length as the loops. Leave it as is or decorate it with cobwebs and glittery spiders.

Finally I used hot glue to add the spiders. To prevent the plastic from melting, add glue to the shafts and let it cool before attaching the shafts to the plastic.

Now let’s see what else Pinterest has inspired! Drop by and visit other hosts to see what they’ve been up to cooking, building or trying! I like to put a Christmas wreath on my gate so I need something that won’t be damaged by the fickle weather we have here in New Zealand. We’re known for intense sun and since it’s summer here it can get pretty hot so I need it to hold its color and not fade quickly. We had showers, storms and thunder over the weekend so I need it all to last! Don’t worry, our weather is actually a lot more summery this week.

With all this in mind, I had two options – I could use outdoor fabric, but it’s expensive and very thick, so it might not be suitable. Another much cheaper option is to use plastic wrap. So, that’s what I did. I noted that I made my first Christmas wreath from plastic sheets about seven years ago and it has been sitting on our various Christmas gates for years. This year I decided it had faded enough to make a new one – the old one was green and red and this year I smell red!

It’s very easy – in fact, it would be a great project for kids. It takes quite a long time, but you can do it while watching TV.

It should be noted that the number of fabrics needed depends on their size and how many strips you will attach to each ring.

Cut the towels into strips about 5 cm x 20 cm (2 x 8 inches). Don’t be too expensive about it – they just need to be roughly the same size. If you have any smaller strips, you can still use them, just don’t put them all in one place.

Find a comfortable seat – you’ll be here for a while. Take the strip, fold it in half over your finger.

Bring the folded end of the strip into the loop under the outer ring of the wreath and pull the ends to form a knot on the cow hook, then tighten the ends. Make sure this node is printed near one of the crown supports.

Continue in this manner until the entire outer ring is covered, making sure the knots are tied together so they cannot move.

Once you get to the inner ring, it’s easier to turn the crown and work from the other side.

I used the picture hook to hang it on the gate, but you can hang it anywhere and however you like. If it will be in a windy area, be sure to secure it.
