To begin with, you want to properly clean your seat. Especially if you’re using an old chair that’s a trash can like me!
After getting it for free from someone on Facebook, it sat in the garage for a few months until I had time to build this DIY bench.

You can use a damp cloth or cloth. I like tack cloth because it’s a bit sticky and picks up all the dirt.

Sherwin Williams was kind enough to send me a flexible acrylic exterior latex paint to test on this project. The flexible liner offers great moisture absorption, which is definitely something I need since we live in a climate with cold winters and cool summers.
I used a paint brush to apply the paint, but you can use a paint pen if you have one to speed up this DIY bench project.
As I mentioned in the video below, when you’re painting outdoor furniture, you want to think about covering the entire piece of furniture, not just covering the wood in areas that can be seen.

Exterior paint is the seal for wood furniture, so it’s important to get into every corner.
Also, don’t forget about painting the bottom of the chair and the bottom legs of the chair that touch the ground!
Note: If you think that your outdoor chair can sit on cushions, you can also install some accessories on the bottom of the legs so that it does not sit directly on the ground.

I finished two coats of exterior paint. If I had kept it a little lighter, I would have gotten it by doing one thing…. but I like to paint in lighter colors, even if it takes some time. The ending is a little light.
Then I put 2 coats of paint outside and wait for it to dry, I liked the color (updated by Sharon Williams). But I don’t like the way the chair comes out of the chair.
My style is usually more relaxed and rustic. I know I can’t mess with the couch like I usually do when painting furniture. The exterior paint needs to be kept waterproof for this outdoor chair, so I can’t sand it. I finished by painting the couch white.

Dry cleaning is a very simple technique that can be used to add some character to colorful furniture. Dry brushing is great for drawing attention to the shape of furniture. It’s also very easy to make!
All you have to do is take an old sanding paint brush and put paint on it and then wipe off the excess paint with a paper towel or cloth.
Then, slowly move the brush to the furniture, just touching it. Always cross the paint brush with the grain of the wood.

You can always go back and add more white features by dry brushing, so start small and go lightly through the brush.
If you have a lot of white in some areas, you can go back to the outer color and use the same dry brush technique to tone the lines.
When the paint is dry, you can start working on the wooden board. We always have a few pallets at home because we use them all the time for DIY wood projects (in fact, we make beds out of wood!).

Once you have the plywood, you can measure the chair and, if necessary, cut the pieces to the correct size to fit the chair.
We ended up separating our seats a little so that they were flush with the top of the shelf pieces to minimize cutting.
I used a nail gun to attach a thin board to the saddle. I added 2 nails to each plank of wood to match the saddle pieces.

Make sure you leave some small gaps between the wood planks so water can get in and not spread to the deck.
I also used some white paint and a dry powder paint method to add the same look to the wooden planks!
I painted an extra piece of wood the same color as the chair and attached it to the bottom of the chair as an extra support post.

Once the chair is set and the paint is dry, you will definitely want to seal this chair before taking it outside.
The exterior paint itself may not need to be sealed, but you should seal the wood paneling. I use a compact sander. Don’t forget to make the sides and bottom!
I can imagine that these deck chairs will lead to many fun backyard parties under the stars. There’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy this deck before winter sets in.
