How To Make Bamboo Table – With all the complex manufacturing technology and automated processes around us today, it’s nice to go back to the basics every once in a while and remember how great old fashioned handmade can be.
Traditional Chinese craftsman Li Zizi doesn’t need computers or fancy machines to make furniture; he only needs a ruler, hammers, chisels, saws and bamboo to make a sofa and a table.

It’s not surprising how he makes a whole set from scratch. From pruning bamboo stalks in the forest to preparing them for handicrafts, he does it all himself.

After preparing the stems, he carefully measures each one and cuts them accordingly. Joining two pieces of bamboo is usually done by cutting a hole in one shoot and cutting the other. Gravity and close-in stems provide grip and better traction.
For the most important elements that support the structure, Li Zizi doesn’t use metal nails…he uses more bamboo. In keeping with the whole bamboo motif, he hammers the bamboo cloths, which he cuts when they are in their final place. This particular couch will be difficult to disassemble, but then again, we’re not talking about subway-transportable Ikea furniture.
Lee Zizi’s technique, which is particularly interesting, is how he makes the material flexible; after heating, the bamboo is easily bent at the request of the owner and takes any shape.

After completing the back and frame of the sofa, the stems begin to be inserted to fill the gaps. This involves placing some small bamboo stalks inside the sofa frame and pressing them together.
He goes through the same process (albeit on a slightly smaller scale) to make a table: he cuts huge bamboo stalks, filling the spaces between them with smaller ones.

You will need to drill holes to fit the cross pieces to the legs.
Determine the dimensions of the table you want and cut the bamboo to size. Leave an extra inch or two on the cross pieces so they can fit into the holes. Calculate the diameter of the cross and drill two holes of the same size centered at 90 degrees to each other in the legs. Choose the tool for the job. I used a dremel to cut out the rough shape and smoothed the edges. Once the pieces fit the way you want, glue them together.

I found the leg joints and bars to be ugly, so I wrapped them with homemade rope for aesthetics. Also, for aesthetics, varnish the wood to preserve the color and give it a nice shine.
