I'd like to add a transmitter to my ceiling fan and a wall switch to match. When removing the ignition (fan/dual flip light), there are five wires in the switch box. There is a blue wire that powers the light. The orange wire that drives the fan. Two black (fabric threads twisted together); one of them is hot and the other is not – and the earth. The new switch only has two sections black and ground. (Current switches are wired like this: black from switch to two black cloths. Red from switch to blue. Yellow from switch to orange). Thank you!!

Black braided wire that is not energized is not neutral. The wire is not neutral because the voltmeter is not lit. Black is not alive

. It was electrocuted because you have disconnected it from the power source. I hope you don't make this gay 🙂

Take the blue wire from the loop. Close both ends. Remove the cap (another thread will fall out). This is the only time you glue wire nuts.

The ceiling fan wiring diagram at the top of this blog post shows common wiring methods used when a home was ever built.

In this ceiling fan wiring diagram, the blue ceiling fan wire connects to the LOAD side of the wall switch, which controls the fan lighting. The black fan wire is connected to the LINE, so that the fan pull chain switch can control the fan motor separately from the wall switch.

If you want to replace the outlet switch wire to control the ceiling fan, see my blog post here for photos showing how to replace the outlet switch to connect a ceiling fan with two wall switches.

It's not uncommon to use the white wire as the hot or LINE wire from a switch. However, it must be re-identified with a color other than white, gray or green. I have rolls of different colored electrical tape that I use for re-identification. Some electricians use a permanent ink marker type pen to change the color of the wire.

With new home , the National Electrical Code requires installing a neutral conductor instead of multiple electrical wall switch boxes. Neutral stages allow you to use electronic devices to control ceiling fans and lighting instead of standard wall switches. See Section 404.2(C) where the neutral conductor is referred to as the “earth circuit conductor”.

The National Electrical Code also requires that ceiling electrical boxes located in areas of the room where a ceiling fan may be installed must be rated to support the ceiling fan. This is an update to Section 314.27(C) of the 2020 Code.

I've never seen a ceiling fan wiring diagram with the fan housing or motor attached or printed. Most ceiling fans have an internal wiring diagram in their installation instructions showing the blue and black wires.

My Electrical Motor Wiring Diagram post may be useful if you are repairing a fan motor. Ceiling fans usually have a motor with a guarded pole.

I recommend reading the ceiling fan manufacturer's installation instructions before purchasing a fan. They are usually available on the manufacturer's website. Links to some of the ceiling fan manufacturers are at the bottom of this post.

The following wall switch ceiling fan wiring diagram can be used in new as well as retrofitting and strengthening.

Ceiling Fan Wiring Diagrams

The wiring diagram for the ceiling fan above shows that power first goes to the switch electrical box, then the hot and neutral currents that are routed up the two-conductor cables to the ceiling electrical box. With this method, the black wire from the fan motor and the blue wire from the ceiling fan light are connected to the LOAD wire on the wall switch.

Fans and lights are controlled by the same wall switch; however, the wall switch can be left on and the fans and lights can be controlled separately with a pull chain switch.

Remote controls can also be ordered for these ceiling fans. Wall switches should only be kept in the on position.

If you don't want a remote but want all of the fan control options to be in the location of a wall switch, look for a wall-controlled ceiling fan that works via the existing cord. In some cases, it's just a remote control that plugs into the wall like a regular switch.

Ceiling fan wiring diagram with power in the ceiling box and the blue wire connecting to the load on the wall switch and the black wire to the fan motor connecting to the LINE.

Shown above is the method used to provide neutral from a nominal ceiling fan box power supply to the junction box. The blue fan is connected to the red LOAD wire from the wall switch. The black wire of the fan is connected to LINE. The wall switch controls the ceiling fan lighting and the pull chain switch controls the fan motor separately from the wall switch.

By having hot and neutral in the junction box, it is possible to supply power to something else, such as an electrical outlet. The diagram above shows the red wire loaded from the wall switch, which is connected to the blue wire from the ceiling fan to control the lighting. The fan motor is controlled independently of the wall switch by the fan pull chain switch, as the fan's black wire is connected directly to the LINE.

How To Install A Ceiling Fan And Light In A Room With No Existing Lighting

A three-core cable is required to run the LINE and neutral along with the LOAD conductor to the ceiling box. The wiring diagram above shows the connection of the blue light wire and the black fan motor wire. The wall switch controls the lighting, and the fan motor is controlled by an integrated pull chain switch separately from the wall switch.

The electrical outlets shown above and below are always on and not controlled by a wall switch.

A 2 1/8″ deep ceiling fan box should be used to mount the ceiling fan above. There is too much wire for a standard 1 1/2″ deep electrical box. The red LOAD wire on the wall switch is connected to the blue wire. on the fan means the wall switch only operates the fan light. The integrated pull chain switch operates the fan motor with the black fan lead connected to the LINE.

If you use the diagram above, you'll need a deep ceiling fan to handle all of the wiring. The National Electrical Code requires 2 cubic inches in the electrical box for every 14 gauge wire. See Section 314 of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).

I'm Installing A Bath Ventilator With Light In My Bathroom Using 15 Amp Combination Switches. I Want To Control It From

The wiring diagram above shows the blue fan wire connected to the LOAD wire of one of the switches. The black fan wire connects to another LOAD switch wire. Lighting and fans can be controlled independently with a wall switch. No need to tug if you don't want to change the fan speed.

Reversing the direction of the fan motor is accomplished by moving the fan motor switch up or down.

Alternatively, a dimmer can be installed for lighting and a fan speed control can be installed to control the fan speed from the wall.
