Don't let the angle scare you. Because they are all beveled under 5 degrees, which makes it easy! Plus, this is a project that you don't need a pocket hole tool to complete. But I love my pocket hole jig, don't get me wrong.

Below I am sharing the plan with step by step instructions. Be sure to scroll down for photos and actual build notes before you start your side table.
Start, but cut the board on the hacksaw. Naturally, you need a miter saw to cut the 5 degrees.
I chose a 2×3 board to support the top cross. But before I use the 2×3, I want to cut off the rounded corners and make them square. I used my table saw to cut about 1/8 inch off each side.

I used a half lap link to cross support this side table. And you can cut these nails using a hacksaw or hacksaw. Although I prefer the saw because I have more control.

We moved the furniture around to fit our new setup and quickly realized we needed a side table for a change. We are looking for something easy and cheap to use. After a few days of browsing online and stopping at every store imaginable, we realized there wasn't much that fit the bill, so I decided to throw something together quickly. This side table is simple, functional, and in my opinion better than anything I've seen for sale. Plus it's a great place to display my prettier books.
The design for this one was pretty simple – I basically took a project I did last year (a box course for Dunn's Studio) and changed the dimensions. Let's get it!

Size, we make our seats to fit your seats. To achieve the perfect fit in your home, measure the height of the back of the chair (or sofa) where the end table will be next to you. As we learned from Keith Miller, the height of your end table should be no more than 2″ shorter or taller than the accompanying chair or couch. Our end table is 24″ high and 15″ wide (15″ is based on aesthetics ). I kept things simple and used nice whole numbers – there were no deficits here.
Before starting to cut, set the circular saw to a 45° angle. Make sure the blade depth is set low enough to cut through the wood completely. Milwaukee circular saws have different markings to accommodate cuts below 45° (versus straight cuts), so be sure to match them up. You can always use a hacksaw for this.
Make the first cut at the end of the board. (This will be the end of your first piece and your starting point for measuring.) Using a straight line or speed square, start by marking two 24″ pieces and two 15″ pieces. Draw a line across the entire width of the tree. Measure and cut each piece individually or the kerf (gap in the wood the width of the blade) will change your measurements.

If you're using construction wood like I am, you'll want to give it a good sanding (to make it furniture). To save time and trouble, use 150-grit sandpaper and a power cord. Make sure you go through both ends of the cut and sand through any seals or dirty marks. I like 150 grit sandpaper because it's rough enough to remove large imperfections and smooth enough that I don't have to go in with another sandpaper. But it all depends on you! Sand as much as you like.
I chose to leave the wood natural, but you can customize it to your liking. I was tempted to paint the inside like the shadow box in Dunn's studio, but I wanted my books and nails to have the pop of color shown here. Leaving it empty also means more flexibility if we reorganize, decorate or move again. You can paint, coat with polyurethane, or follow my instructions to keep things pristine.
Note: We're looking for something temporary for our home, but if you want something durable, you should definitely consider a clear coat to keep things clean and uncluttered.
Simple Coffee Table Styling
My biggest goal for this installation was to get perfect corner lines with perfectly matching seams. I've tried wood glue and epoxy, quick dry glue (which doesn't require a lot of drying time), and glue that needs to set overnight. After repeating the process, I came to the following conclusion: everything ends the same way. Everything is almost perfect, but the extra effort is missing. Even when it's secured perfectly, the screws still pull oddly and cause some lifting. And since we are dealing with a larger material than the box shelf, the glue is more difficult to work with. Most importantly, it should be a quick and easy project, not your masterpiece. Some imperfections add to the appeal.
So here's my suggestion: Use a relatively quick drying glue for this project as it will give you more grip when working with the wood. Then have a friend hold the seam together while you drill and add screws. If not, do what you can with two hands.
For pre-drilling, you'll want to drill two holes in each corner to attach each piece. Be careful where you drill! Hide the screws by drilling through the bottom of the base and the side at the top so they are not visible. Use 2 1/2″ screws.

And that's it! It took me less than an hour to put everything together and it was affordable – the wood was under $20. I'm a big fan of this piece, it's also very adjustable. You can use different sizes and shapes, shorten them and turn them into chairs, add a shelf in the middle, paint or stain them – there
