This discovery came at the request of an Instagram follower; She fell in love with the Anthropologie Rhys leather chair and asked me to find a more affordable look for her. The great thing about this chair is that it’s incredibly versatile – it fits both modern traditional decor and mid-century modern decor; It would be the perfect accent chair for a living room, but would also work well in a home office or bedroom. Whatever your budget or where you put it, a beautiful chair is waiting for you!

Vera Modern Accent Chair In Brown Leather

This is where I started. This floral chair from the 90s. It was my favorite dog. He used to clean his face and dirty paws on it like it was his personal washcloth…can you tell? …LOL.

I started by giving the chair a good vacuum. I went to clean the upholstery, but then decided that most of the dirt was on the apron, which was off anyway.

Preventing Wrinkles On Leather Seats

The skirt stays level. I used a screwdriver and pliers to remove them. Once I got into the groove, they came out pretty easily, which I share in the video. There were a few rivets that had broken and were too difficult to remove, so I hammered them back into the wood. This is important because the rivets are sharp. They can be dangerous for your pet and/or your feet. Make sure all rivets are removed or reinserted for safety!

To keep the paint away from the legs and stomach, I covered the areas with masking tape. Well, my sister, Andrea. I got help from them at the beginning of this project. 🙂

Painting fabric is very easy. The key is to get the fabric wet enough to absorb the pigment from the dye. This way it colors the fabric instead of sitting on top of the fabric.

I would choose this terracotta chocolate as the base color of the colored pencil mineral paint for the back. I mixed about a 3:1 ratio, which is about 75% terracotta and 25% chocolate. I used my large 3 inch Wooster brush to dip it in a bowl of water to get the bristles nicely wet and then dipped it into the paint.

I’ve tried both methods on a granny chair I painted 4 years ago and I find dipping the brush much easier and faster than spraying the fabric. It’s a good idea to try both methods and see what works better for you.

When the first coat was almost dry (still slightly damp), I applied the second coat. I repeated this with a total of three layers to completely cover the floral pattern.

If you stopped right away and let it grow, the results are still impressive! But I thought I’d try a faux leather one with a bit of detailing.

When the third layer had dried, I added Chocolate and VanDyke Brown Glaze to the remaining paint in the jar. I didn’t measure, but I’m guessing it was about 10-15% glaze and 85-90% paint. The frosting was added to give me more playtime to create the texture.

To get the leather textured look, I crumpled up a piece of tissue paper and then placed it on top of the wet paint and glaze mixture.

When all the tissue paper touched, I immediately pulled it up. Isn’t it wonderful?! I was so impressed with how real it looked!

To finish off the faux leather chair, I used brown wax to darken the seams and random areas of the leather. I like to use cheap dollar store brushes I have on hand for dark waxing.

The wax was applied heavier in some places, lighter in others and then I gently wiped off the excess with a shop towel. Since I didn’t rub and polish the wax, it takes longer to dry. I’ll check it regularly, but just to be safe, I probably won’t be sitting on it for the next 1-2 weeks.

I have always loved the look of metal chairs and the durability is also great. However, one thing about metal chairs is that they have a hard seat. If you don’t have a cushioned chair, they don’t encourage you to linger around the table.

A few years ago I realized that I could use a modern metal chair for our family by making leather seat cushions. It’s been a few years since I made the pillows and since then I’ve blessed other people with leather pillows and chairs, but I still love this project and wanted to update the tutorial and share it with you.

Seat cushions are simple and effective, right?! Before we get into the tutorial, let’s talk about metal chairs.

We bought a set of 4 (because you can get a set of 4 for $150 or less) when we moved into this house. If you are new here, we moved from a 1400 square meter house to this house (3800 square meters). We had practically no furniture when we moved here. These chairs are therefore an affordable purchase that we can use in the dining room, kitchen or even in the living room when we need more chairs. They are great chairs for moving around when we have extra people over, to accommodate at the table (especially when we have game days), and just to have extra supplies.

The not so great thing about these chairs is that they don’t have padding. When our son was younger, I didn’t want to cover up. There’s one more thing to smudge, right? But as he got older, I began to miss the seat of the chair, which was a little softer.

The Leather Hide Store contacted me to ask if I would like to try some of their upholstery hides and I jumped at the chance. They all come in different leather colors, but I was particularly interested in the brown leather options.

I knew I wanted a medium tone leather for the seat of the chair and something with a bit of flair. I wanted a piece that had some imperfections or had some imperfections. Basically, I wanted it to fit into a kid-friendly household without worrying about it getting scratched.

The boy delivered them. Holy Moly, now I’m like #annasofterleather. You saw a little taste of it on IG if you follow me. If you don’t follow me – you must! =)
