Start by creating the ends as shown. You can also secure it with 2 1/2″ countersunk head screws and glue.

Now it’s time to attach your cross brackets. A standard miter saw should cut 50 degree angles from a square. If it’s not, you’ll need to mark it with a square (remember, there’s 50 degrees outside the square, so it’s 40 degrees from the edge of the board.

Another trick is to hold the board in place, mark the angles and cut. These are not backplates or anything like that, so a little glue and some nails or top/bottom countersunk screws will do the trick.

Smaller X pieces can be cut to fit. Attach using 1-1/2″ pocket hole and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws, one screw per link.

Then do the top…and hold it in place with 2 1/2″ countersunk screws. If you have PH screws on hand, I’d only use a couple of them!

One of the final steps in this project was attaching the slats to the table and chassis. Cut the 2×6 slats to size and secure them to the frame with galvanized screws. Center the table on the frame before installing the screws. Lock the slats together by adding glue and screws.

If you want to improve the appearance of the coffee table, we recommend adding X-shaped components on both sides of the structure. Cut the ends of the components at 45 degree angles and secure them in place with galvanized screws.

Finally, we recommend finishing touches. Fill the hole with wood filler and let it dry for a few hours. Then sand the wood surface with fine-grit sandpaper, pressing the debris down.
