This coffee table is designed to meet our needs. First, we wanted the ottomans we made to fit snugly underneath. Secondly, we want the proportions to be appropriate in our living room. It fulfills both requirements perfectly!

Our coffee table measures 20¼” high x 24⅞” wide x 52½” long. OMG! Isn’t that adorable?!!❤️❤️❤️

The pouffe slides all the way into the bottom and has plenty of space on both sides. See how it blends beautifully with the top and draws the eye to it… 😍

This coffee table is very affordable, costing us less than $35 in wood. First, we cut the 5-2x6s to a length of 52½ inches.

Here is the hub for cutting the rounded edge of each board. I like my furniture to have square corners. (Btw… we love our Cobalt table saw, especially because it comes with a collapsible stand for easy storage!)

After that we chose the best side of each board on top of the coffee table, placed them, then joints and marks, and made it the way we wanted it.

Then we flipped them all over and counted each one they were going in. That way you can track which board goes next and which direction is best.

AKreg-Jigis is a simple tool that I have talked about a lot and used over and over again. This creates a pocket hole and you can put the 2 pieces together. It’s very funny! When you screw in the screw it holds the 2 boards together in a tight cement fit.

We started gluing, scraping and scratching the top of the coffee table. Notice how we label them and reverse the direction of the craig jig.

More clamping…our clamps weren’t long enough for the top of the coffee table so we had to get creative. Guys, clips are life! I love them! In fact, after building this coffee table, I bought some very long clips.

When you turn it over, you can see the stamps that need to be sanded into the wood, and the plates are not perfectly smooth with each other. I’m going to use my favorite sander!

Now it’s time to start working on the final support. Hubby and I put a lot of thought into these blocks…do we want the “feet” to be smaller? Want to see ‘X’? If so, where should the end of ‘X’ hit? In the upper right corner? Shall we divide the ‘X’ into 3 parts or cut in the middle? A lot to think about. We are both very happy with our choice!

First we make a box to support each end. Here Hubby uses a square tool and we combine it. We make sure everything is square. 👍

The top board is nailed to the two side boards. Remember to pre-drill, you don’t want to split the wood. The bottom board is craig-jigged from the bottom. I forgot to take a picture of it when we made it, but I got a perfect picture.

Adding the X to the end support gave our coffee table the structural support we wanted. 👍

I’ll be honest, the X can be a little tricky…but it seems like the easiest way to make the X look.

Place the end support box on top of the drawn ‘X’ timber, line up the outer edges of the edges and mark with a pencil. (This next picture is a mock-up of a corner.)

Once you have cut your X pieces and each piece ends up square. Place one part inside the square and the other part on top to form an X. Then mark where you want to cut the mark.

Following your marks, you can cut the marks with a multi-tool. Remember that you will be cutting the middle of the board, and the side cuts will be slightly angled. Cut the hub notch, then try for fit, then cut some more, fit, cut, etc… It’s trial and error, adjusted for a perfect fit.

While the man worked on the end support, I sanded and stained the top of the coffee table. I first used Miniwax Pre-stain to treat the wood. Later, Miniwax special walnut was used. This is what you see in this picture.

We both decided it wasn’t dark enough, so I toned it down again with a heavy coat of Mini Wax Provincial. Then sealed with 3 coats of Varatan soil clear coat.

My First Coffee Table Build

Once the x and end supports were done, I drilled holes, holes and joints. Then sand and prime with Zensers Bullseye 123 Plus. Finally, I painted on Benjamin Moore’s Simple White Satin.

We connect the first end support without X in the middle. It is placed on the edges, closed and pre-drilled. Using 2 ½” screws, we attached each end support to the top of the coffee table. Then we inserted the X into place and attached the end supports.
