How To Make A Chair A Rocker – I want to make a rocking chair for my husband. But now I think I’ll do the second one for myself. This is my first time making a rocker and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

How To Make A Chair A Rocker
First we need a jig to shape the rocker. I just took a 15 x 5.0 x 90 cm piece of wood and cut a curve on one side. As long as the piece is symmetrical, we don’t care how big the curve is.

To make a rocker you need 6 pieces of wood 3.0 cm wide, 0.8 cm high and 85 cm long. Apply wood glue to all the pieces and place them in the jig. Using sacrificial tape, apply pressure with some clamps. You should make two pieces like this.
Once you have the parts ready, now you need to make the mortar to fit the joints on the chair legs. The mortar should be 5.0 cm from the edge of each rocker. I used a dedicated machine for this project, but you can always use a chisel and hammer and you’ll get the same result. Cars do nothing but speed you up.
Cut 4 pieces of wood measuring 80 x 2.5 x 7 cm for the four legs. With the band saw make a tenon for each leg. This tenon should fit into the mortar on the rockers.

Time to add some seat support. Again, we will use the mortar and pestle technique to assemble the pieces.
The support of the chair is another piece of wood like the legs. Place it in the corner with the foot and mark where you want the mortar. Again using the chisel make the mortar and install the seat support. Attach all the pieces using wood glue and some clamps. Let the glue dry overnight.
We need to add a support rail to assemble the two parts of the seat. For the front and back rails I used two pieces of wood 60 x 2.5 x 7 cm. For the front I used the mortar and grout technique and for the back I used 10 mm dowels.

For the back I made an 80 x 60 cm frame and drilled some slots in the top and bottom pieces for the slats to fit. 0.8 x 4.0 x 73 cm wooden slats with all rounded corners using a router. and slightly rounded.
Use some 10mm dowels and a 10mm drill to attach the back to the side as shown in the picture.
For the stool I used a piece of 30mm top wood I had in my workshop. It is strong and similar to the types of wood used. I only need to make 55 x 60 cm to fit between the seat supports. Then I used some screws to secure it in place.

My original thought was to make the arms slightly curved, but I think curved arms look better, straight ones look better. So I used two pieces of wood measuring 50 x 7.0 x 2.5 cm. He shaped them on a band saw and made two slots to hold the back of the chair. By making that slot, I didn’t need to add another support rail to the back. I rounded all the corners with a router and attached them with wood glue and wooden dowels.
Now you have a beautiful rocking chair. My husband loves what I did but I’m a little jealous so I’ll do it myself.
You can use any type of finish you want. You can paint it or just use varnish to show the wood. It is a reasonable price. In fact, what I paid Restoration Hardware was $2,000 and I can’t justify it. I lamented this fact to a friend when he suggested “why not DIY”? It pointed me in the direction of the glider base and made my brain spin.
This base is technically designed as a replacement for an existing glider seat, but it also works perfectly for a new DIY glider. I chose this armchair from IKEA, which is very similar to the $2,000 glider I got at Restoration Hardware. Next, I ordered the base and then one morning, with Daphne sleeping in the other room, Garrett and I assembled this glider in less than an hour. Even better, the total for this DIY is a fraction of the Restoration Hardware glider. I love the final product!

Armchair – I chose a covered chair because babies are finicky, but a rocking chair works just as well. Make sure you choose a seat with a hidden bottom so you can’t see the bottom of the glider when it’s done. budget

Take your feet off the couch. If you’re assembling a new chair from IKEA, don’t add legs.
Attach the plywood to the bottom of the chair with 1 3/4″ (or more) screws. Make sure the screws go into the wood frame of the chair. I used about 10 screws.
Attach the base of the planer to the plywood with 1″ screws. Positioning the base was the hardest part of the whole DIY. I attached the base to the center of the chair first, but later moved to the back end. The chair You the base can be moved around until you like how the chair swings.

And that’s it! So easy, right?! This DIY has probably been done before, but I wanted to share it now if you’re looking for a great glider without the crazy price tag. And speaking of value, let’s talk about how much a glider costs.
Not bad for a glider today. And of course, that number can be reduced by finding a chair with missing legs from IKEA’s bargain section. Or find a vintage chair. This would be a great DIY with a vintage chair!
