How To Make A Table Centerpiece – In this post: Do you love the look of all the wooden box tables that are everywhere? Here’s how to make your own!

A wooden box is a modern country/luxe way to display a variety of flowers and plants (artificial and fresh) as a centerpiece. We’ve been using ours since Dean made it in the fall of 2013, and it’s held up a lot of stuff on our three dining room tables, as well as the folding table in our newest home. Since ours is so versatile, we thought we’d show you how to make your own DIY wooden table or centerpiece.

2. Sand each piece before assembly. (Can be difficult to get into corners etc once assembled)

3. Use the nail gun to fold the box on the table, one at a time. You can start by connecting all four sides and then add the bottom (it fits in the “box”). Or you can glue each side down and work like that. It doesn’t matter – do what works for you.

5. Drill holes to match your drawer pulls and attach them to each end of the table box.

We are not an organized type of people when it comes to day-to-day matters. (I mean, more often than I care to admit, it’s a cereal-while-sitting-on-the-couch situation.)

I love this mottled clay dinnerware set that we’ve owned for several years. They are very durable (even our children hit them), and since they are stoneware, we can put them directly in the oven.

Neutral foods are easy to find in thrift stores (even expensive, vintage ones), so keep an eye out for your next frugal trip.

It’s definitely not an everyday thing, but this little accent makes Thanksgiving, anniversaries, or birthdays extra special.

Last summer we collected magnolia leaves in the garden, washed them to line each Thanksgiving area, and our oldest daughter wrote names on them with permanent marker.

Our hydrangea bushes are always bursting at the seams this time of year! And I love that it’s so easy to fix with green stems in the mix. (Or you can dry hydrangeas for a simple dining room centerpiece.)

Any flowers or stems I find I pop into a neutral container like this container with clear legs.

I like to cut a few ginkgo stems from our ginkgo tree in the garden when it turns yellow each spring.

Last fall, I cut stems of purple leaves from the loropetal bushes in our yard and wrapped them around pears for an easy Thanksgiving centerpiece that anyone can put together.

For Christmas I cut some hemlock and cedar branches to make a low Christmas centerpiece and added dried orange slices and orange pomanders I made with the girls.

I added juniper berries that I picked from a tree in our girls’ parking lot (with permission, of course).

Just a few candles can liven up a simple dining table setting. There’s something about the sparkle of a fire that makes a birthday or anniversary dinner magical.

We play a little game at home with our girls – while the candle is burning on the table, we do cute things and practice our table manners. (My parents and grandparents did the same for my brother and I when we were growing up, and it’s one of my favorite memories.)

You don’t need to fill the center of the dining table with things or connect every open space with decorations.

Let the table “breathe” and instead leave free spaces in the middle for serving plates or charcuterie boards.

My favorite plate is the 5-in-1 acrylic cake dome that can be used as a cake stand, serving tray, chip & dip server, punch bowl or serving dish. And it works perfectly outdoors because it is wear-resistant.

I use this bowl with white legs around the house not only to serve food at the dinner table, but as a fruit bowl on our kitchen counter or to grow white paper bulbs as a centerpiece for the dinner table in the winter.

This round cutting board is the perfect size and shape to make a cutting board for 6 people. I can’t believe it’s from Walmart! It looks like it’s from a high end store.

We’ve offered this black cotton or flat gold for custom dining table settings, just to add something more than plain silver.

That’s our dining table decoration hack! It’s the many small details that add something special to the moments we want to enjoy.

Although, don’t worry… most of the time we eat bad tacos on paper plates. If this post gives the impression that we eat “pinky up” food with candles every day. 😉 Yes, no. He looks tired.

But setting the dinner table is okay to put down the phone once in a while, turn off the lights and enjoy being together. Setting the table in this way encourages us to do so.
