How To Cook Rice In A Pressure Cooker Xl – The Instant Pot is great for all things but rice is one of my favorites. Here are my easiest instructions for cooking rice in the Instant Pot (video included)!

Rice is one of those super basic dishes that most people seem to make all the time as a side dish or as the base for an entree. Admittedly, before I bought my Instant Pot, I rarely cooked rice. I really don’t know how to explain it…it’s not hard to boil water on the stove, sprinkle rice, salt and butter on top, cover and let it cook for a while. For some reason it felt like pain to me, which I found completely ridiculous.

However, cooking rice in the Instant Pot has changed my life. Well, maybe a bit dramatic… but I love cooking rice in the Instant Pot and now I do it all the time. There is a rice setting on the Instant Pot, but I never use it. I find when I cook rice on the rice setting it gets a little sticky. You can change the time setting, but I only use the manual setting (because that’s how I do most things).

To get rice that is slightly al dente, cook it for three minutes. If you want your rice to be a little softer, let it sit for four minutes. This recipe is for white rice, so you’ll need to increase the time with brown rice (I’ll make a video about that later). For this recipe, you will use an instant steam release (insert the steam release handle back onto the vent seal instead of naturally depressurizing the Instant Pot).

The perfect slow cooker white rice is quick and (relatively) easy to make. It’s a pressure setting so you’ll have to wait a bit for it to stick, but it doesn’t take long. All you need is water, rice, salt and butter, and voila – perfect white rice!

Here’s the problem with the Instant Pot – it doesn’t need to reduce the cooking time, and that’s because it takes time to build up the pressure, and when it reaches high pressure, the actual cooking time begins. Pressure build-up typically takes 5-10 minutes depending on what is being cooked, how much liquid is in the pot etc. This reduces the ACTIVE cooking time. That means you can boil the rice, start the timer and go. You don’t have to watch the rice as it cooks. And then, when the timer is up, you can be in another place, it doesn’t matter, because of course the pressure will drop and it will take longer (15-20 minutes). So actually cooking white rice in the Instant Pot takes about as long as it does on the stovetop, but it requires almost zero of your attention. I call that a win.

This is one of my favorite things to cook while I have something else to eat. I’m already in the kitchen cooking or washing dishes or whatever, so I can just throw the rice and water in the IP and let it run while I’m busy. I then place the rice in containers or plastic bags to store in the fridge or freezer for later meals. It’s great to be able to get pre-cooked rice whenever I need it, but without the “need” fee that is added to frozen pre-cooked rice at the grocery store. It’s a small investment of time with a big payoff.

There are many benefits to cooking rice in the Instant Pot, but at the top of the list is the actual texture of the rice. It comes out perfect every time. Note that this method works for “regular” rice varieties, but if you’re dabbling in the world of rice like making sushi rice or forbidden black or red rice, it’s even better to know the specific cooking time for the varieties Find. But for regular long-grain white rice and short- and long-grain brown rice varieties (including basmati and jasmine rice), this method will work for you.

Here’s a question that might come to your mind. To wash or not to wash? Some varieties of rice (especially white rice) benefit from washing in cold water until most of the starch is removed. This will help the rice grains hold their shape and prevent them from sticking together. Basmati rice and jasmine rice in particular benefit from washing. I usually measure out the rice and put it in the IP pot. Then pour cold water over the rice to cover it. I waved it in my hand and then poured the water in. Then I add more water, shake and water again and repeat until the soaking water looks clear. If you’ve never done this before, you’ll probably be surprised by the results. When the water runs clear, I water as much as I can, but there is always some left over in the pot. In this case, I reduce the water I add to the cook to about 1/4 cup so the excess water doesn’t make the rice mushy. It works like magic!
