I don’t know about you, but running out of detergent and not being able to do the dishes is not an option here. Delaying the dishes is worse than delaying the laundry (which happens often).

But what if it’s late at night and you go to the closet and realize you’re out of detergent? Running a grocery store late at night seems like the last thing I want to do, and waking up to a mountain of dirty food seems even worse.

Have you seen any of these recipes online for making your own detergent? They look interesting, but many of them require things I don’t normally have around the house or things I don’t know I’m comfortable keeping on the counter (borax, oxyfuel, etc.) You mix up some great recipes I’ve never made late night.
But I’ve recently seen that dish soap and baking soda are all that’s needed. Things I always have.
We wash our dishwasher at least twice a day here and three times on weekends. 6-8 people at each meal, homemade, we ate so many dishes!
Dishwasher Soap Hack Review
So we went through a lot of soap. I try to buy a more natural brand because when I open the dishwasher and get a strong chemical smell on my face, it doesn’t seem like a good idea. If the steam coming out of the dishwasher had such a strong chemical smell, I’m sure it would be on my countertop, and I don’t like the idea. So I try switching to a soap that’s a little lighter on the chemicals. But these types are expensive and for some reason they come in very small packages. I buy 4 or 5 packs at a time.
But what if we leave? It will be urgent! So when I got the idea to hook up the dishwasher with other common household items, I had to see if it worked!
I’ve been doing this every day this week. I run the dishwasher twice a day, usually on weekdays, once with our regular dish soap and once with this homemade mix. I continue with the normal detergent for the workload after dinner because it runs at night and I don’t notice, I will try this new method for the workload when I’m home. During the day – if only I had some kind of superfoam.
Homemade Dishwasher Detergent (soap) And A Natural Rinse Agent
I can honestly say the results are the same. I didn’t notice any difference in food between the two methods.
Homemade soap refills are as clean as packaged soap refills. I haven’t calculated the costs yet, but I can assure you that a bottle of dish soap and a large carton of baking soda is a lot cheaper than the expensive dish soap tablets I buy.
Fill your dish soap cup with baking soda, you don’t have to be exact but mine is about two tablespoons. Then add a few drops of liquid detergent. I have a pump dispenser for my dish soap, so I put in half a syringe. Close the lid and run the dishwasher as usual. That’s it.
Cleaning With Dishwashing Detergent
I checked the amount of soap. The first recipes I read said just 2 drops, but that wasn’t enough for me, really cleaning a whole load. So gradually I added a little more until I was comfortable. I haven’t found the upper limit yet, but I’m not pushing too hard.
Baking soda is very important here. Don’t try this without! This prevents soap scum from forming. The reason they say you shouldn’t use dishwashing liquid in your dishwasher is because of the flame-bubbles all over the floor. But the baking soda prevents that, so the soap allows you to cut through the grease and clean without creating those bubbles. I opened my dishwasher at various points in the cycles to see what was going on in there and there were no bubbles. I’m not a scientist, so I won’t try to figure out why this is. All I know is that my dishes stay cleaner, there’s no soap on the floor, and I don’t have to buy detergent.
I have never tried this with other brands of detergent. I have tried several other brands of liquid hand wash soaps and I keep coming back to Dawn so this is what I used. Most natural and/or cheap brands won’t work either. I feel like I have to use more soap to wash a sink full of dishes and it’s just not worth it.
The Difference Between Dish Soap, Dishwasher Detergent, And Laundry Detergent (and Why It Matters)
I pour my detergent into a pump dispenser that I keep next to my sink. I love it because the spout extends enough that you can pump it right into the sink. This article was written by James Sears. The Best Non Toxic Dish Soaps
Water, heat and movement all contribute to increasing the amount of bubbles with detergent inside the dishwasher.
These bubbles find their way into the nooks and crannies of the device, resulting in areas where they shouldn’t be (like the camera or electronics). This can cause serious damage to your device.
It’s best to turn off the dishwasher as soon as possible and try to get as many bubbles and water out as possible.
