Tired Of Being Alone Poems – A heavy dose of humanity comes from Reva Walker’s 1979 poem at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women.
JSTOR will highlight at least one poem from the American Prison Newspapers collection every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the month of April. The January 1, 1979 issue of the Kentucky Inter-Prison Press came as no surprise when it was printed in the yellow pages. But only on the second page there are many moments that will surprise the reader of the 21st century.

Best Poems About Being Yourself (handpicked)
Beyond the pain of loneliness and longing depicted in Walker’s poem, page two contains more thought-provoking information. For example, parole numbers are calculated for the entire state of Kentucky, broken down by facility. By today’s standards, amnesty was once given liberally in the Bluegrass State. Public access and publication of information within the prison system has been at odds with declining levels of disclosure and the percentage of people recommended for release. Kentucky’s parole approval rate dropped to 41 percent in 2016, about half the program’s average.
“It is not enough for us to be busy when we are released,” he wrote. “We must learn to understand people’s motives: we must learn to understand our mistakes and sufferings in order to establish proper relations with other people and with the society in which we hope to work well.”
Its second episode offers deep insights into black history that read like a contemporary. “Through the unceasing struggle of black slaves for freedom, the broad foundations of democracy in America were laid.”
