Beyond the pain of loneliness and longing depicted in Walker’s poem, page two contains more thought-provoking information. For example, parole numbers are calculated for the entire state of Kentucky, broken down by facility. By today’s standards, amnesty was once given liberally in the Bluegrass State. Public access and publication of information within the prison system has been at odds with declining levels of disclosure and the percentage of people recommended for release. Kentucky’s parole approval rate dropped to 41 percent in 2016, about half the program’s average.
“It is not enough for us to be busy when we are released,” he wrote. “We must learn to understand people’s motives: we must learn to understand our mistakes and sufferings in order to establish proper relations with other people and with the society in which we hope to work well.”
