Herman Miller Size C Aeron Chair – In 1994, Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick set out to transform the modern office. They may not have known it at the time, but their mission to create a strong, inclusive and eco-friendly chair for Herman Miller exploded onto the scene and, 15 years later, it became the most popular chair in the America.
Dubbed the “Dot-Com Throne” by New York Magazine in 2006, the Aeron chair has been a mainstay in offices in the technology boom since its inception. And it's no wonder why. The Aeron chair has been carefully designed (and recently redesigned) to remain an innovative, innovative and adaptable office chair for years to come.

Don Chadwick was commissioned to remaster his and Stumpf's iconic design in 2016, with much new research into Herman Miller's ‘science of sitting'. Taking into account the advances in technology and materials, Chadwick improved the original design while maintaining the classic functionality that brought the chair to success and a number of design awards.

“…when you start working with Herman Miller, you are looking at something in the past, and yet you have to look at the future.” – Don Chadwick
Although the Aeron chair may be an elegant office accessory, it is by no means simple in design. The very thing that makes the chair great is also what makes it a little intimidating to order. The large number of possible options (more than 400 options in just one size and color) can be overwhelming. We're here to break down the components and help simplify your options so you can own a piece of design history without breaking a sweat.
The updated color palette offers Graphite, Carbon and Mineral as your front options. Carbon is a neutral mid-gray color that matches many color schemes. Minerali is the lightest, and Herman Miller called it ideal for open office plans. And Graphite is the darkest and closest to the original Aeron seat color. The colors have been carefully designed to coordinate with the other components of the chair and give it a perfect look.

The next option is size. Each option is completely designed to fit your ergonomic needs. This is achieved in part through an inclusive range of sizes that match the height and weight of the user. You can imagine the following options:
These sizes are approximate to provide the most comfortable and supportive options for a range of individuals; it's just a matter of choosing the range that suits you best.
There are 9 size/color options for the Aeron office chair above. Two more products are in the collection; Aeron Stool – Counter Height and Aeron Stool – Bar Height are taller options that may be suitable for sit/stand workstations.
Once you've chosen the color and size you need, it's time to explore specific product options. Let's break each component down into digestible options.

At the top is the goal. The finish is about the hardware of the chair, while the color choice you have already chosen is for the fabric part and the armrests of your seat. With the first finish option shown, Satin Carbon/Dark Carbon, you'll see a slightly glossy satin finish on the armrests and lower part of the seat hardware, followed by a more matte finish on the seat base .
The first/top color always refers to the armrests and the base of the chair, while the second/bottom color always refers to the base of the chair. Compare the following side by side to see exactly which parts change:
For back support, the Aeron Chair offers three options. Additional back support is not offered with the Zonal Back Support option. This relies on the excellent construction of the chair and the Pellicle 8Z material for support and should be very comfortable for most users. The pellicular suspension also helps keep you cool by allowing air, body heat and water vapor to pass through the seat and back. This increased ventilation allows your skin to maintain an even and comfortable temperature. Your attitude also dictates how much additional support you need. The adjustable lumbar support option adds an additional 4.5″ of adjustable range for lower back support.
Finally, the Adjustable PostureFit SL option is the most expensive addition and goes up the middle of the back to stabilize many areas with two adjustable belts. It gives you a sense of natural movement. Equipped with adjustable sacral and lumbar support, these individual pillows mimic a healthy standing position. As shown above, the lumbar support is built into the chair frame – no extra cushions or parts here.

Choose your glide options (known as wheels or castors on your chair) based on the surface you're walking on. Hard Caster is only suitable for carpets, especially the low carpets often found in commercial buildings. The middle option is a standard caster suitable for most office floors, while the Quiet Roll option includes a braking feature to keep your chair from rolling.
Adjustment is key, and the angle of your chair may be something you need to adjust throughout the day. All Aeron seats will recline in the back to some extent. The reclining mechanism provides a smooth trajectory that provides an optimal balance point to maintain control of movement while lying down. The standard recline uses a simple tension knob for manual adjustment, while the recline limiter option lets you choose a comfortable recline range if you want to transition slightly back and forth from standing to reclined. Finally, for those who sit in their seats, the recline limit option and the seat angle adjustment allow the seat surface to be tilted forward up to 5 degrees.
The final option is the hand, and it is quite simple. Simply decide if you want the arms of your chair to be adjustable. Fixed arms are fixed and will never be able to move from the factory set position. The height-adjustable arms can be moved up and down, while the fully adjustable arms can rotate to inward or outward angles, tilt back and forth, and move the Up and down backrest for ultimate adjustment.
So here it is, the Aeron chair broken down into all the parts and pieces for easy selection. The careful engineering that went into this modern design icon is evident in every option you choose. Happy setting!” It will be a completely new experience, however the chair will still be an Aeron chair.”

Now the Aeron has been redesigned in almost every way to create an office chair that better supports the people and the types of work we do today.
Herman Miller enlisted co-designer Don Chadwick to rethink design criteria in the context of today's work and technology. With stronger and smarter materials, better customization options, new finishing options and stronger and more comfortable seats, they didn't reinvent or redesign the Aeron chair – they remastered it. The new Aeron works smarter than ever – so you can too.
