What Is The Best Herman Miller Chair
The Herman Miller Aeron is a premium office chair with a mesh back. It performs well in our meters, earning a score that puts it at the top of the fleet. However, it didn't quite manage to win the award for best office chair. It is very comfortable and has many adjustable features; it is also very well built and comes fully assembled. Unfortunately, it has one of the highest retail prices in the range.

Comfort, the most important of our test criteria, is an important part of each seat's final rating. In order to assess and evaluate this very subjective criterion, we formed a diverse panel of judges who spent at least one full working day trying each chair and giving them a questionnaire to fill out. Specifically, we had to rate them and rate how comfortable the seat, armrest, and back of each chair were, and decide how long they'd be happy to sit in each one.
The Aeron scores pretty well with most of our judges, especially when it comes to the armrests. They are thickly padded to raise the legs, but it can be difficult to place them parallel to each other because the leveling mechanism on the back requires both hands to work. The backrest isn't the most comfortable we've ever seen, and it's a bit lower than others, so taller testers in particular had some negative things to say about the Aeron.
The seat is also quite comfortable, with each of our testers rating it average or better. In fact, the vast majority rated the Aeron seat near the top of the pack. Overall, most of our judges found it comfortable enough to sit in at least for a full workday, but generally the most comfortable chairs would have few complaints.

We then ranked and rated the various adjustments that each of these office chairs should accommodate for different body types and sitting positions. This measurement is less responsible for comfort, but is still a significant part of the Aeron's final score. It lacks some of the customizations that premium models have, but it still performs well. In this measurement, we compared how much you adjusted the resistance of the backrest, arms, seat and tilt and how much you used all these adjustments to sit in the recommended ergonomic position. Again, a large panel of judges tried each chair, different heights and preferred seating styles for this final test.
The Aeron allows you to adjust the backrest and lumbar support a lot. There is the “PostureFit SL Lumbar Support”, which consists of two pads that have to adapt to your body and support the lower back. You can't adjust the height of these pads – which isn't usually a problem since they're quite long – but you can adjust the level of support and firmness.
This office chair has three different recline limits that you can adjust – upright, semi-reclined and fully reclined. The incline resistance knob is easily accessible under the front of the seat, making it easy to adjust the desired resistance. However, the backrest does not go very far and is slightly lower than other seats in the middle of the backrest.
Aeron's armrests are very adjustable, but they are a little thick so they can dig into your desk.

The armrests can be moved up and down and back and forth and rotated, but not narrower or wider. The seat has enough cushioning, but the depth of the seat tilt cannot be adjusted. In addition, even our shortest referee (5'3″) can put his feet on the floor in this chair. Although the armrests are a bit high, this chair is quite easy to configure for an ergonomic position on most tables. It is thick and can collect depending on your table.
Our next series of tests focused on the Aeron's construction and warranty, which made up a much smaller part of the overall score than comfort and adjustability. To assess durability, we looked for the most commonly identified issues and recorded how well each chair held up to our internal testing. Aeron scored extremely well on this indicator, earning one of the top spots in the entire fleet.
We scanned as many user experiences as possible about the Aeron and found no complaints. The most common problems we found were people complaining about the fit of the chair, based on their personal preferences. It's solidly built and showed no signs of wear after our testing.
For our fourth and final benchmark, we assessed and compared the effort involved in assembling each of these chairs. This does not make up a large part of the overall score, but we still consider this criterion important. The Aeron is one of the easiest chairs to fold and has the highest ratings. The Aeron arrived packed and it only took us 10 minutes to go from box to box.

I believe the parts I received are genuine but incompatible. The seat is from 2005, and the backrest is newer. This is easy to check if you look at the armrest adjustment mechanism on the chair and compare it to newer models with a Posturefit backrest and another mechanism. The maker's markings have also been removed from both pieces, which seems a bit suspicious. I guess you get what you pay for, but I was still hoping to get a $700 chair and parts to match.
